Can anyone recommend any quality photo gallery applications for a website? What I am looking for:
- PHP so I can hack the code a bit if needed
- CSS so I can customize it to the site
- Fairly lightweight. I don't need anything heavy as it will only be part of the site.
- Open Source would be nice
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's Zenphoto which I set up on my domain just because I was curious. It's a very simple install and using it is a breeze and a joy, thus the Zen I suppose. I don't use it all that often as I'm not much of a photographer but I've been happy with it. Not sure if it would work with your needs but it could be worth a look.

Ah yes, I heard about Zenphoto a while ago and made a note to check it out, but of course I make notes all the time and lose them so thanks for reminding me Griffin.

Nice, happy to hear it's working out for you. Since I'm not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, I really appreciate that using it is simple but effective. You know, I just want to upload, organize and share some photos man not solve the riddle of the Sphinx, or something like that. Also, I'm a sucker for the word Zen.

Zenphoto is my gallery of choice. Simple, it makes sense and is easy to set up. A no-brainer.

Yeah we went with Zen Photo for our gallery and its simplicity is appealing, but we also are going to have to do some customizing to the code to add a couple of things.

The quickest is obviously http://flickr.com You can download desktop apps for windows, mac and linux that make it easy to resample and upload pictures.
Or you could try something like Gallery: http://gallery.menalto.com/ Designed for photo galleries but no reason I can see that it couldn't be used for your purposes.

I love Gallery 2, but be warned: it is feature rich meaning that it can do a lot of stuff that the average user definitely has no use for and also feels bloated and slow!

Gallery 2 is feature rich, but anything you don't want to use can be turned off, so there's no need for it to feel bloated and slow.
Though, I have a hard time imagining it being slow even with tons of modules installed, it's not exactly resource intensive program on a server. I have about 15 installations on my server on different domains and no real load unless I'm getting very heavy traffic.

Ozone42: I guess it can depend on your server. Also I know one of the developers and he definitely admitted that you should turn off and uninstall all modules that you aren't using, as it can greatly improve performance.

Time to revive this one since I'm always on the lookout for the good stuff so hit me with gallery software that you have worked with everyone.

I'm currently testing out SlideShowPro.
I've knocked up a test gallery - it's actually 3 albums within a gallery.
The thing I'm impressed with is that once you have got your flash gallery in place, you can use their director product to manage the images within it instead of having to rebuild it.
One of the reasons I liked it so much was the ability to have a full screen slideshow as an option.

Yeah SlideShow is very slick, but I would be looking at something that I can add more community features around. They don't have to be built in already since we code up so much stuff here. SlideShow is perfect for you photographer peeps though.
