From the Clip How To Clean A Scratched CD With A Banana posted by Mike:
- Peel the banana
- Rub the banana on the CD in a circular motion
- Use the underside of the peel and rub the banana in deeper
- Wipe away the residue with a lint-free cloth, like you’d use to clean your car windows
- Using another cloth, remove smudges with a spritz of Windex
- Voila, she is like new!
This really makes me wish I had a scratched CD to use this technique on.
So the science behind it: I imagine the goal is to make the laser not reflect wildly off a scratch, but instead, get absorbed into the goo from the banana. I have absolutely no CD repair engineering courses under my belt but it makes sense to me... sorta.

How do people figure out these things or even bother to test them out?

I imagine somebody was eating a banana one day, slipped on a CD on the floor (scratching it), then in the process of falling backwards his banana wiped across the CD and repaired it in mid-air.
fuscom: I imagine at ITT Tech.

Somebody will make it a business just like how some people still are going strong from LPs.
