I have been thinking aboiut getting a super portable eee-pc for writing and web dev (php, mysql type stuff) on the move and really like the look of the eee-pc. Does anyone have any experience with it for this teeny computer?

Wish that I did. Been thinking about doing the same, buying one for writing and the such. Of course, I've also considered getting an XO from the OLPC project, since my writings wouldn't eat up to much internal memory anyway. At $400, the Buy one/Give one offer doesn't seem bad at all.
Edit: Didn't realize, but the OLPC buy one/give one (laptopgiving.org) is only available to folks in the US and Canada.

Yeah - we don't have the OLPC over here in the UK :(
I've been tempted by the EEE ever since I heard about it... and today I found out my local pc store has them in stock so I wanted to get some opinions from users before plonking down the £200 needed. Anyone else used one at all?

I recently clipped an article about running OSX on the EEE - PC ... it really sounds like a wonderful deal - you can experiment with whatever OS you want, and if it all bites the dust you can always revert back to the original linux.
I know I'm not answering the question, but ... heck. I want one.

I have played around with it at Myers and I can tell you, it's sweet. I'm going to buy myself one as soon as I have enough money and to make things sweeter, you can upgrade the RAM and storage space yourself.
Just be prepared, it's ridiculously small though and I don't like the fact it's using 800x480 res and the keyboard really needs some getting used to. But it's fast and responsive and really really light. It's going to be my link to the world away from my desktop.
Also remember, it's meant for a specific market that is web surfing and first time computer users. Unless you change the OS, you're not going to get much out of it aside from what it can give you.

I was looking at the EEE PC, but went with a Fuji Lifebook U810 instead. I like everything about it but the keyboard. It's small, light, and easy to take everywhere. I usually take along a mini keyboard if I'm doing serious typing, though.

Isn't the U810 expensive enough to take your liver out or something?

I work at a computer company, so I get hardware at wholesale. One of the perks, or traps, of working there! I am a gadget junkie, and the temptation is everywhere!
