It's quite an elaborate artist's installation that apparently dates back to 1999. What I find really interesting is that it's part of an academic / artistic investigation into what makes us accept statements from the web based on how we judge the legitimacy of certain sites and which elements play a part in that. I'd never heard of it before, so cool that you pointed this out.
What I think is more gross is the idea that a man would want to go through the pain of pregnancy.
Seriously. There's nothing I respect women more for than the fact that they give birth to the proverbial "watermelon through the pee hole" and we, as men, don't.
I told one of the girls about the male pregnancy thing at work. I think she thought I was perverted. No... it's just very, very weird. And isn't he like four months preggers?
I have to say I'm not so engrossed at all. As an artistic and sociological experiment, I think it's rather valuable. I think we have to face the fact that sooner or later this will become (at least theoretical) a reality. Often art follows social events and tries to create a framework for them. In this case, it's art preparing public opinion almost for the possibility of a male pregnancy.
Don't forget the guy is also connected to two medical institutions. Does he regard this as kind of a training ground?
Oh, and, MrVillhauer, male pregnancies would of course all end in a caesarean section – no other holes would be involved ;-)
Eventually it will happen because there are men that want to experience it and scientists love to charter new areas. I have all the sympathies in the world for the child because I would not want to be the first child born by a man. Maybe the world would be more kind if the child were born out of the country.
Wait... if the baby is growing in his abdomen... wait this is so weird I can't even think of the words to say what I want. So like if it's growing in his abdomen, what protects the baby? Like you can't just recreate a uterus in a man.
Also, I believe that a certain Japanese-style image-board has corrupted me to the point of not believing any image that I see. Anywhere. My first thought was; "That's a nice 'shop".
I really don't want to share. Girls can get prenant and be mothers. Our bodies have all the parts to do this and when it doesn't work, we can adopt. The picture is real gross, though.
Also, I *don't* see male pregnancy as an inevitable outcome of scientific advances, since the immunology of carrying a baby is so complex--not to mention the issues of nutrition, placenta, etc.
The guy would have to be on immune suppressors through the whole process.
This is old news. I saw a documentary about male pregnancy 10 or so years ago. It had a bodybuilder type guy who wanted to be pregnant as a science experiment. Was a really enlightening doco which dealt with both the moral and scientific issues. Don't now how it all worked out but good I suppose because I haven't heard much more about it.
Oh, I bet it's something that will be a reality at some point. Personally, I don't want children but, for many gay couples, this could be an answered prayer. To be able to have their own child without involving the parental rights of another person.
On the other hand, I don't know many gay men who would willingly accept stretch marks. :)

Wait, so this is Mr. Lee's idea of an art experiment?

It's Mr Virgil Wong's idea of an art project. Apparently, if he's the same guy, he also entered a proposition for the World Trade Center Memorial.

I wonder how much less sex men would be inclined to have if they knew they could potentially become pregnant. I'll venture... oh, 99%.

First of all that is disgusting. Second of all its so apparent that its not real. Third, men dont have the autonomy to keep a fetus alive....yuck!

Another art project that really put things on the line between real and not real was the GenPets ordeal. Anyone recall that one?
As for male pregnancy, I'd think it's not going to happen too soon ;)
