Them: "I don’t particularly care if it is in Java or not. I just want it to work."
Gah!!! If they had just called it something like "Awesomescript," I would never have this problem.

Even if it had a memorable name like AwesomeScript, it doesn't mean people would have any more of an idea of what it did...
Unless, that is, you called it something like: RealTimeProgrammingHappeningInTheUsersBrowserScript but that would probably be renamed RTPHITUBS for ease of use and start the whole thing over again...

It might have something to do with Java being the primary mechanism for client side programming (applets) at the time.
This seems to agree with me http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/javascript/2001/04/06/js_history.html.
