Is this possible?

The DNS servers will point to where the domain is hosted. And any subdomain off that will still need to reference the domain. I would say no.

It's most definitely possible but you'll have to have access to your DNS servers. You'll just set up an A record for the sub-domain and point it to the right IP.

Jonathan is right, it's possible but you (or your hosting company) would have to edit the main configuration files.

Ah, didn't think about that. Smarter men than I will show you the way. :)

Yes, it is possible. As the others have mentioned, you will need access to your DNS server entries (and the ability to add A and CNAME records.
This method is used to setup pages and webmail access for Google apps for your domain, so it might be worth reading the help system on Google from basic instructions.

It's also commonly used to set up a store that is powered by a 3rd party company. It's done more than people think. :)

Keep in mind: if you have support issues contact the correct company. That is why many hosts do not like doing it - they are contacted about support issues for something not on their server.

any host will update your domains dns zone, just ask yours

You can do this with a lot of hosts. I know for dreamhost you can point an A record at the IP of your other subdomain host, then add it there as well. I was doing this for a while to have ColdFusion hosting on a subdomain hosted at Dreamhost.

thanks
