I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a shopping cart system that can be further customized and built upon (both front-end and back-end code). PHP/MySQL would be preferred, but feel free to list whatever you've worked with.

I'm keeping solutions like Shopify in mind, but I want to see if there's any self-hosted apps out there that can be further customized without feeling like crap at the end of the day.

Oh, and if you completely hate a specific shopping cart app, please let us know why! Thanks.

Lea hates Yahoo! Cart. I know that much.

I've used virtuemart, which is an version of phpShop for Joomla! It supports all the major payment systems/shipping systems. It can be a bit involved to set it up though. Totally free though.

My advice: stay away from X-Cart, but others might say they love it.

Not out yet, but keep an eye on freeCSScart. I know I am!

OsCommerce and ZenCart are bad news.
If you get get away with something simple like shopify, its your best option. If you can't - you might need something custom.

haha word, so everyone has something bad to say almost all the systems out there. That's what I've been hearing while asking around, too. Seems like custom is the only way to get anything decent.

Any other cart apps I don't know of? I looked at freeCSScart, but it's another hosted app and I don't know how much that can be customized. I'll keep a look out on it, though.
