jCreator and netBeans for java.
Eclipse for C++ and PHP
Notepad for HTML and CSS stuff

I use ultraedit for everything, it's customizable in all the ways I need it to be. You can control the syntax highlighting and auto complete. it supports code collapsing if desired. and hundreds of other feature I can't document in a comment.

I don't see the point in a WYSYWIG editor when you have to view the file in the browsers to find out whether your CSS is working anyway.

Textmate FTW.

That's all that needs to be said.

vim is all I need.

I use Dreamweaver CS3 when I am forced to use Windows, I use TextMate, the best editor I think, on my Mac at work, and then when ever I am directly on the servers I use nano.

I'm a big fan of eclipse with the PHP addons, but I also REALLY like PS Pad. Lightweight and yet it covers all the bases for formatting and colorcoding that I need!

Textmate

no more, no less

I use CuteHTML Pro 6 (propr.) and Visual Studio Express (propr., $0), depending on the project.

Smultron and Dreamweaver here on my macs!

notepad++ on win, kate on linux.

I think most people who use Coda have a big huge gaping crush on it. It doesn't do it all though, but it gets close to your list.

Coda has from your list:

- code highlight
- markup validation
- code automatic indentation (well, as much as most editors, its not supremely auto though)

As well as:

I forgot to mention that 'local file manager', AND project manager would be a great deal!

The other gig your looking for I use CSS Edit for (along with live css editing, and "click-element-snap to css" type features)

CSS Edit can do:

- css panel TOC

The only thing from this mix would be the collapsing.

The features these two give me you don't mention are:

  1. Previews of the code while editing (in both!)
  2. Click preview to snap to code
  3. FTP Integration
  4. Command Line integration
  5. Reference Books built into the software
  6. well... a whole slew of other stuff I can't rightly think of right now

Good luck in your hunt!

I almost exclusively use gedit. I have been known to use Vim, but only when working over an SSH connection. Regarding gedit, it is deceptive, it looks dead simple, but in fact it can be tricked out to perform pretty much any functionality you need.
