» Firefox Crippling On Mac  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by alisa.

Firefox has really gotten bad for me as well. At first I thought it was some of the extensions I had installed, but now that I'm starting to hear more and more about problems (Dvorak as well, it seems) I'm starting to think it's a version problem.. I have 4 gigs of ram, for crying out loud, this shouldn't be happening.

It's gotten so sluggish that I only use it for web development, doing most of my recreational surfing using Safari.

More than a week later, how is everyone liking their iPhones?

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 9, 2007

I personally love mine. No real major complaints. You?

That's the point, really. These are all things that can be fixed with a software update so I think they're completely irrelevant to bitch about.

Hardware gripes, on the other hand, are legitimate although i haven't heard any serious ones other than the GSM antenna.

The iPhone is Sex on Circuits

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 3, 2007  ...   Last By: Mike @ 1 year ago

I have been playing with the iPhone over the weekend and I have to say, despite all the criticism being bandied about on the web lately about this or that, I'm pretty much floored by the thing.

I think the best part about it is how organic the UI feels. For the first time I feel like I'm interacting with real world objects when I navigate around the iPhone because of all the physics taking place. This is what has been missing from user interfaces and devices all these years - a true connection to the physical world.

Needless to say, it makes all other devices feel pretty stiff and cold. I believe the multi-touch features in this phone are what make it such a sensation. It overshadows the other strong points and all the weak points in my opinion.

If you want you can read my whole gushing review here.

So far it's pretty much two thumbs up for me.

I think that boycotting anybody by not buying the iPhone is about the lamest activist thing you can do.

» iPhone Software Upgrades  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by stephenisrad.

It's my opinion that Apple released the iPhone fairly feature light because they had time constraints, not to mention personnel constraints. Heck, they pushed the release of Leopard back to meet the deadline for crying out loud.

I bet they just wanted to focus in on the most essential apps they could, and then add the rest later as software updates. By focus on, I mean make them as bullet-proof and bug free as humanly possible, in true Apple fashion.

Apple has a lot riding on this phone, not the least of which is their stock price. I can guarantee that the rev A iPhones will be virtually free from problems, and that we'll be seeing a hell of a lot of cool apps rolling out for it over the next year.

As far as I'm concerned, any deficiency the iPhone has that's software related is a non-issue, as Apple can upgrade or add applications at their whim if too many people get bent out of shape about something.

That being said, I'm irritated it's not on the 3g network, but hopeful because of early reports that nationwide edge speeds have increased dramatically since last night's updates.

This is a software issue. If a camera can take a picture, it can take many pictures fast to make a movie. It's simply a matter of writing up an app that does it. People have been doing that for years on the homebrew end, adding video functionality to devices that only have still functionality.

I'm in line too, and probably number.. 15 or so. Not bad. I'm on Apple's wifi network, full bars. I'm here with a buddy and we have a couple foldout chairs. It's nice, and because it's in an indoor mall the scenery's not too bad either *wink*

Yeah, I gotta say I'm pretty impressed that it stayed that scratch free. I hate using cases.

The iPhone scratches on the Back, not the Front.

Apple Community — Posted: Jun. 28, 2007  ...   Last By: clicknathan @ 1 year ago

I took a careful look at David Pogue's video review of the iPhone and noticed that it had quite a few scratches on the Apple logo in the back, but that everywhere else it seemed completely scratch free.

It's encouraging. The Apple logo scratching is a small thing, and the fact that it was scratched means Pogue put it through the ringer, and the rest of the phone remained scratch free.

I'll be in line Friday, who else?

You can check out the full analysis at my blog, of course.

I've updated the image. I made the pink titles darker and I added textures from my current design. Check it out here and let me know what you think. Thanks all.

» Redesigning my site, need opinions  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Stegg.

@Mike, I'll be following veerle's method most likely.

@cooper, I knew the pink would be a risk.. I'm gonna darken it.

» Redesigning my site, need opinions  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Stegg.

Thanks for all the opinions.

The design is wide because I plan to make it a liquid layout, so it won't actually ever be too wide for the screen.

I'm going to darken the pink so thanks for that tip.

I'll probably drop one of the colors too.. most likely green.

It's nice that some of you like my current design. The only problem with it is that it's a bit bloated.. I had to use some big images to get that look. I want to move to something cleaner and much lighter in weight, using as much css for the look as I can as opposed to images. Should I maybe include some of the textures from my other site?

Redesigning my site, need opinions

You can view the mockup here.

You're opinions are greatly appreciated. I want to commit this to html soon. I'm going for a cleaner look and much more lightweight than my current site.

Thanks everyone.

» Digg Getting More Unoriginal Each Day  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by pelf.

I don't know, I don't think anyone can deny the significance of digg. It's the big dog of social networking so it's going to get crap no matter what, but I think it's still a valid resource. I visit it every day and usually find very cool stuff.

Plus getting dugg is great. My top five pc game article got dugg like 3 weeks ago and my visits per day went from like 10-20 to 170-200. Anyone who says digg residual traffic isn't high doesn't know what they're talking about and I have the google analytics screen shots to prove it.

I suppose, if you think humans are the most important thing in the universe. But understanding how everything works at the atomic level will lead to a much greater understand as to why diseases spread and how they're cured.

I think the way you judge what the best ever is by judging its impact. DNA discover is great, but polio and a host of other diseases were cured before its discovery. Quantum mechanics, however, affects our lives daily. Every time you turn on a radio, computer, light switch, cell phone, x-ray machine, etc., you have quantum mechanics to thank. Not to mention a good 30% of this nation is powered by nuclear reactors. Take a moment to stop and think about that. Up until nuclear power was available, we were relying on pulling energy rich resources out of the earth. Now we have the capability to both power and destroy the entire planet. Best. Discovery. Ever.

» The Biggest Scientific Developments  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by craig552uk.

Meh. All of these developments pale in comparison to the discovery of the transistor. Without the transistor, I wouldn't be posting this right now and you wouldn't be reading it. Thank John Bardeen, William Shockley, and Walter Brattain.

Outside of that I'd say the development of quantum mechanics is pretty high up there, considering it has the broadest ramifications. The human body is complex, and the discovery of DNA was certainly significant, but when you compare this to the very origins of the universe, I think we're talking about different leagues.

Thank Planck, Einstein, Bohr, Feynman, and Fermi.
