» Gmail Constantly Crashing Firefox  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by seowebdesign.

It's HTML tidy causing the issue. I had this too. It's because of javascript in the new Gmail.

How you can fix it is once you are logged into Gmail, right click your HTML tidy icon in your browser and select 'disable for gmail' then your problem goes away.

Basically all you are doing is making it so that when you are on any page gmail page (gmail.google.com, etc.) HTML tidy is disabled.

Be sure that you only select 'disable for gmail' otherwise you will block HTML tidy working on everything.

That's cool too but it's more modern because of hacking an iPhone. I like Apple's original logo.

1980s Brick Phone Updated

Technology Community — Posted: Dec. 21, 2007  ...   Last By: RightOn @ 1 year ago

Poking around the intraweb this morning, I came across this little technology gem.

Basically Motelona has gone old school and copied the Motorola brick phones of the 80s:

The thing is only $129, runs on GSM technology and I think it's pretty cool. Sort of bulky compared to the smaller phones of today but still.

My first cell phone was a Motorola 550 flip. Ah the memories.

Here is the product page if you want one. If you end up getting one, let me know.

MIT student arrested

Technology Community — Posted: Sep. 21, 2007  ...   Last By: wrttnwrd @ 1 year ago

Apparently a woman was arrested this morning for carrying a fake bomb into Boston's Logan airport.

She's an MIT computer whiz who loves "crazy ideas" and "saving the planet from evil villains," according to her blog which is hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Here's the full story.

She reportedly walked into Logan International Airport with a fake bomb made of lights, wires and putty (later found to be silly putty) strapped to her chest.

So much for having blinking lights on the front of your shirt.

» SIM Cards in the US  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by CMarshall.

To confirm, in the USA, AT&T/Cingular and T-Mobile are GSM providers that use SIM cards.

Sprint PCS phones are CDMA and do not use SIM cards, however Nextel (3-Digit Series) specific phones do use SIM cards but don't work with the SIM cards found in AT&T or T-Mobile phones because of not being a GSM provider.

» What are you planning on doing with your $100.00 Apple Store Credit?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by ericjohnson.

Well after being forced back to Apple's stores to purchase more Apple products... keep in mind that AT&T stores are not part of this deal... I'm really not sure what to do with the credit.

The credit can't be used to purchase music, videos and other content on iTunes.

I'm guessing Apple would lose too much money on the service if it simply gave away 100 songs to each iPhone customer.

Isn't iTunes an Apple product too? Apparently not in regards to the Apple credit.

Maybe I can sell the credit on eBay?

» Anybody else get a crazy first iPhone Bill?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by JLosh.

Most cell phone providers bill a month in advance and since you probably needed to add some services to your plan to use the iPhone is why your bill is higher.

How much was your bill prior to purchasing and using your iPhone?

» Unlocked iPhone  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Tyme.

@Mike: Indeed the auction is out of control with fake bids, but c'mon, as pointed out in the auction description:

"This is the worlds second unlocked iPhone(outside of apple vaults), and your chance to own a piece of mobile telephone history"

So it's totally worth 8 figures... hehe... not.

It's still a cool piece of geek history. Someone I'm sure will buy it for a fair price.

I believe his asking price was less then $600.

» Unlocked iPhone  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Tyme.

As promised, they did release the code for unlocking iPhones.

Apple will most likely try to block this with a new firmware update but as always, someone will solve that too.

Now that the iPhone can be unlocked safely, what do you think this means for sales of the phone? More or less sales?

The guy is also now selling the phone in the video on eBay.

Here is a link to the auction.

I'm with you Scrivs on the comedic value of this video, especially with "Thanks to gray, iProof, geohot, dinopio, lazyc0der".

However he did forget to thank his jock for all it's support ... hehe... you always need to thank your jock (and your mom) for things like this.

Apparently this guy and his crew found a way to fully unlock the iPhone and will be releasing the method and code within a week.

The video below was posted to show an iPhone working on T-Mobile. Real or fake? You decide:

Google Maps Murder Mashup

Technology Community — Posted: Aug. 14, 2007  ...   Last By: carmodyarc @ 1 year ago

The Los Angeles Times newspaper has built a brilliant Google Maps mashup called the Homicide Map showing all murders in the city this year (515 at post time).

The functionality of the data presentation and user-selectable options for specifying age, race, gender, cause of death and day of the week are pretty interesting.

» Johnny 5 is for sale  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by peroty.

With the exception of Kamigoroshi, I plan on doing a contest for the pillows... so hopefully Mike, Scrivs or Tyme will either chime in or contact me off notes to discuss.

Keep in mind that these pillows are not official 9rules swag, just something my lady made to celebrate getting into 9rules.

Hopefully at some point, we can actually purchase 9rules "stuff"... stickers, shirts, etc... that would be so cool.

» Johnny 5 is for sale  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by peroty.

@Kamigoroshi: Who was nice enough to send you a WordPress shirt?

Oh wait, that was me :)

» Johnny 5 is for sale  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by peroty.

My lady made the pillow seen above for me when I got into 9rules last year (r5) as a "good job" gift.

After a lot of fanfare and feedback from other members, she made a few more and I sent one to Mike, Tyme and Scrivs.

I had planned on giving the others away if people covered shipping/mailing costs and the materials to make them (about $4.00 USD) but it was decided that was not a good idea as to protect the 9rules brand.

However, I think it would be cool to have some sort of contest (to be determined) where it costs member points, paid to me :) for entry and the winners (up to 3) each get a pillow at no actual money out of pocket.

Not sure what Mike, Scrivs or Tyme thinks of this idea but if they green light the idea, I have 3 more pillows ready to go and there will not be any more... yep, limited edition :)

If not, I will use them as decoration around my office.

» Johnny 5 is for sale  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by peroty.

@RightOn: Um, it's my pillow and I'm not parting with it :)

Don't let my little RAD Robot fool you... hehe... it can transform into a mighty 9rules pillow protecting machine... complete with foam rockets.

» Johnny 5 is for sale  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by peroty.

Dude! That's totally rad!

I would love to have Johnny 5...

For now, I'll just have to stick with my RAD Robot (and 9rules pillow):

Cell phones light up operating room

Technology Community — Posted: Jul. 30, 2007  ...   Last By: clicknathan @ 1 year ago

You gotta love technology.

Apparently in Buenos Aires there was a blackout, so cell phones were used to light up an operating room.

The surgeons and anesthetists were in the dark... A family member got some cell phones together from people in the hallway and took them in to provide light

That must have been a lot of cell phones.

iPhone will it blend eBay auction

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 25, 2007

A couple weeks ago, I posted a note showing a video of an iPhone being blended.

The guy said at the end of the video something about putting it on eBay... well here it is:

Blended Apple iPhone and a Blendtec Total Blender

Auction description:

You are bidding on the blended Apple iPhone that Tom Dickson destroyed on July 9th 2007 in his Blendtec Total Blender. Along with the blended Apple iPhone you will be receiving a brand new Blendtec Total Blender, a "Tom Dickson is my homeboy" t-shirt, and a DVD of the first 50 "will it blend" videos.

It's currently at $888.00 USD. Quick, go bid before you lose out :)

» BlackBerry Pearl vs. BlackBerry Curve  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by chatterbox.

I personally like having a full qwerty keyboard, so the BlackBerry curve would be my choice.

If you want a BlackBerry that will give you almost the same experience as an iPhone but for half the costs, check out my post on the upcoming BlackBerry 8820.

Currently I'm using a BlackBerry 8700 which I've turned into an iBerry :) but plan on getting an 8820 once they are released here in the U.S. later in the summer.

Emailing Typewriter

Technology Community — Posted: Jul. 25, 2007

I love when people hack things... basically take one piece of technology and turn it into something else, especially when it's useful.

Today I stumbled upon an emailing typewriter.

This project was inspired by a mother's frustration with e-mail and using a computer.

Apparently she simply cannot relate to scroll bars, the mouse, control keys and so on.

Her son decided to make for her a typewriter that sends email.

It is a regular portable typewriter, which has concealed electronics that automatically sends the typed letter as an email to the intended person when the letter is finished and pulled out of the machine's carriage.

On the geektastic scale of 1 to 10, I give this a 9.

Make Your Own iPhone From Paper

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 25, 2007  ...   Last By: clicknathan @ 1 year ago

The author of the blog paper art gadgets shows in this video how he made a miniature iPhone out of folded paper.

This guy made the pattern on his computer, printed it out on paper, cut it out and folded it, touching the model up with white paint and spray gloss.

He even made a miniature reproduction of the iPhone itself, its cradle and the striking iPhone box and black envelope containing documentation.

To much time on his hands?

Amp’d Mobile Going Bye-Bye

If you are an Amp'd Mobile customer, pay close attention to this.

According to reports, Verizon says Amp’d is using $370,000 worth of Verizon’s services every day and that Amp’d will have just $9,000 in the bank by Monday.

Anyone here on 9r an Amp'd Mobile customer? If so, what are your thoughts?
