Spider vs. Bee... BBC vs. National Geographic

Science Community — Posted: Jul. 29, 2008

When The Ranger was young he enjoyed greatly the diverting summer sport of tossing hapless invertebrates into spiders' webs and seeing the ensuing fight. Even today he's not above the odd experiment, just to see what happens. Of course, we all know what's likely to happen. That's why it's such fun.

No, your code is not so great that it doesn’t need comments

Programming Community — Posted: Jul. 28, 2008

It’s not a sensible goal for beginners and inexperienced developers. Tell them that they should write good code without any comments and they will deliver on the second part but struggle with the first. Even among experienced developers, assuming for a moment that it is possible to write perfect code that doesn’t require comments, there will be far fewer who are capable of this than there are who think that they are.

Is Apple becoming Microsoft?

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 28, 2008

Leave aside for the moment the seemingly-deepening hardware shortages: frantically popular hardware products are always in short supply at launch, and often even for months or years afterward (Nintendo Wiis remain elusive, and the company is girding for a third straight Christmas season shortage, if you can believe it).

You would assume with these powers you also have an unbreakable body or spongy body or something. You would land on your neck and crack 35 verterbrae.

» Cancer Center: Cell Phone Risk  ...  Last Reply: 4 months ago by Scrivs.

In 2008 we are still having this cell phone causes cancer issue? There has to be a definitive answer to it and I don't want to sound like the people in the 1950s who said smoking doesn't cause cancer, but it seems silly to think that any type of phone will bring about cancer in your head.

Oh well, I text anyways.

You don't need superhuman powers, just the power of ants to be the most incredible person in the world.

Apple may be eying sub-$1000 notebook market

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 23, 2008

Investment bank Piper Jaffray said Tuesday it believes Apple is readying new iPod and notebook products that will apply downward pressure to profit margins because they'll be priced more affordably, such as 13-inch MacBook that will fetch less than $1000.

Yeah I doubt D3 at decent lvl will run well on those things, probably have to tune it down. And SC2 with unlimited units? Game over.

Yeah it's a selfish gamer request, although the games I would play on the laptop aren't that graphics-intensive, I could play WoW on my iBook. It's just knowing you have power is cool.

Apple hints at lower prices as iPod, notebook refresh on tap

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 22, 2008  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 4 months ago

I'd say that I am going to get a new notebook and possibly desktop within the next 12 months so the next upgrade will be interesting to see since it fits within my timespan. I know not too many people hope for this, but I'm hoping for a decent graphical update in the notebooks to give them a bit more juice than what they currently have.

You can keep the rest of the fancy stuff.

If you have ever used a computer that had more than one monitor or a computer with a very big monitor attached to it, it’s hard to go back to using just one little monitor.

Now imagine using one of the huge gigantic multi monitor setups below. Going back to even two or three monitors would feel extremely small in comparison.

Social Engineering 101: Mitnick and other hackers show how it's done

As a young fugitive hacker, he went to jail for breaking into computer networks, mostly by using his cunning and persuasion than his tech skills. He was an early master of the science of social engineering--manipulating people into doing what you want, such as giving out passwords and other information that unlocks sensitive information on networks.

The Second Coming: Ars goes in-depth with the iPhone 3G

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 15, 2008

If you're a business user, then we feel the answer is no, it's not worth it. The original iPhone was not made to be an enterprise device, and the new iPhone isn't either. Although some baby steps have been made, BlackBerry users will find themselves frustrated with the lack of complete Exchange support and may even end up returning their devices, or at least carrying an iPhone alongside a BlackBerry. We already know several who have done this, and it will happen to many more.

Not sure if I'm out of the loop at all on these things, but has this been the quietest launch ever for WP or is it just losing steam since it basically is the mainstream blogging engine? I mean how do you get excited over blogging engines anymore?

WordPress 2.6 Available

I’m happy to announce that version 2.6 of WordPress.org is now available, almost a month ahead schedule. Version 2.6 “Tyner,” named for jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, contains a number of new features that make WordPress a more powerful CMS: you can now track changes to every post and page and easily post from wherever you are on the web, plus there are dozens of incremental improvements to the features introduced in version 2.5.

6 disasters from the book of Apple

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 9, 2008

On the eve of what I thought would be another triumph for Apple - until I saw Vodafone NZ's iPhone 3G pricing plans and saw the huge reaction - here, for your edification, are some Apple disasters. Enjoy the schadenfruede - but to paraphrase the great Chinese military writer of 2000 years ago (Sun Tsu), every defeat is a lesson. Is the hope.

Top Ten Worst Uses for Windows

Microsoft Community — Posted: Jul. 9, 2008

After all these years I am willing to admit that Microsoft has won the desktop and server wars. Thanks to VMWare Windows is spreading throughout the datacenter. And, of course, there is only one operating system to use if you are dependent on Microsoft apps like Outlook, Word, and Excel. While I have joined the chorus of security folks who rail against the Microsoft Monoculture I still cannot believe some of the uses for Windows. Some of them are just downright silly, some you may claim are criminally negligent.

iPhone 3G Reviews Are In

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 9, 2008

Walt Mossberg of the WSJ has been testing it "for a couple of weeks" and sees that surfing on the faster 3G is between three and five times the speed of the original iPhone. However, Moss found that browsing on the 3G network drained his battery much faster than browsing on the original. Externally, he says the speaker was "much louder" (YES!) for both music and speakerphone, but otherwise pretty much the same as the original. One bug/feature he ran into was that you can only sync your calendar and contacts with either Exchange or your personal accounts, not both.
