» Smackdown: BlackBerry Bold 9000 vs. Apple iPhone 3G  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Tyme.

My longer convos are at night than day too so the free nights/weekend thing kicks in.

That's why I have a home phone... if people want to talk my leg off I just tell them to call me @ home after 5.

My son lost my cell phone about a week ago and I haven't missed it. I'm still looking for it though. :D

» Smackdown: BlackBerry Bold 9000 vs. Apple iPhone 3G  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Tyme.

I have two major methods I can communicate with the people I need to reach.

95% of them prefer to speak to me so I simply call them, the others have constant access to email so if it's not urgent I fire up email on my iPod Touch (or iPhone if I had one) and shoot them an email.

I have no reason to text anyone. The whole concept has been taken out of context anyway... SMS was designed to be used to send a short message where a phone call would be overkill, like "honey, will be late for dinner"... teenagers etc, now carry on hour long conversations with text messages where such a conversation could be carried out FASTER with a voice conversation.

What gets my goat is groups of teens at the mall, "hangin with their friends" yet ALL of them are glued to their Blackberries texting friends that their not "hangin" with... seems completely backwards to me.

I like to consider myself up on all the latest technology but to me this whole "texting" thing seems stupid.

» Smackdown: BlackBerry Bold 9000 vs. Apple iPhone 3G  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Tyme.

Am I the only person on earth that could care less if my cell provider completely canceled all text messaging?

That's like the absolute last thing I look for in a phone.

I think any time you use something written by someone else, and try to bend it to your whims, you're going to run into gripes about how it does things or how it was coded.

I know several folks here wrote their own, that way they know how everything works and don't have to rtfm (as much) when something breaks.

» YouTube videos are going to become like MySpace pages  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by katelynjane.

That's hilarious... yesterday my dad published a video on YouTube and asked me if I knew a way to put a speech bubble with something in it over a section of the movie in iMovie.

One DAY later I find out you can do it from YouTube itself. LOL

Yeah if you're looking for a full featured money management application then Quicken is THE way to go on Mac.

drudgereport.com

Simple concise goings on with about 90% success rate with information I find interesting. I go there first every time I sit down at my computer.

Took me about 3 hours when I was initially told about it to see it that way but it's clear now :D

» Chawlk's had 9 lovely babies!  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Scrivs.

Yeah it would be like if I were looking for political notes I would head to wingcolors.com and see what's happening in the commentary/political world.

But if I wanted a general overview of all things I'd come over to Chawlk.

Chawlk is "home base" :)

Jen, take a left at the podium, head for the big Apple... hang a right past the elephant and registration is at the big Chawlk board.

;)

» What iPod do you own?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by k3vin.

I have a 20GB 4th Gen iPod, and an 8GB iPod Touch.

My wife has a 1GB iPod Shuffle (the clip on kind)

» Recommended PDAs?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Gnorb.

Overstock.com has Palm TX's on sale for around $230 a LOT... you may look there.

It's annoying having to learn a new written language but if you get a LOT of use out of it you catch on fairly quickly.

The iPhone/iPod Touch synch with your address book, and iCal calendars.

» Recommended PDAs?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Gnorb.

I had a Palm Tungsten E back before my iPod Touch and I LOVED it... They sell an amped up version called the E2 for $199 that takes SD cards and you can play MP3's on it. It fit ALL my needs perfectly.

Normally I would suggest the iPod Touch since it handles contacts/notes (and doesn't have that pain in the ass Graffiti recognition) but you're not looking above $300 so... (the 8GB Touch falls in @ $299)

» Rumor: Apple buying Adobe?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by davidhayes.

Apple to buy Adobe has popped up I think 4,000 times since Jobs returned to the helm... it's a popular rumor, I just don't see WHY it would happen really.

Minus the vanity plate

My iPod Touch hands down. I bought it thinking it would be a fun toy and now I have no idea what I would do without it. I can check the weather forecast in half a second, check my email anywhere and keep in touch with friends and family without having to haul out my laptop and park myself somewhere.

LOVE it!

» Facebook Chat  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by RightOn.

Most of the people I connect with on Facebook are old friends in other states or even countries so it's working well for me.

You can make yourself show as offline though, which might be what you're looking for.

» Facebook Chat  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by RightOn.

So when do we get this for Chawlk? :)

» Facebook Chat  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by RightOn.

I love that feature as well, I've found TONS of people that way

I wonder if this note has anything to do with it but I suddenly have a CRAPLOAD of friends online @ facebook.com now :)

» Facebook Chat  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by RightOn.

I found it this morning and I can't stop playing with it, it's REALLY nicely done.

I love how it follows you around.

I would be on eternal on-call technical support status for her. She can be on a rock solid OS and FIND a way to break something.

Wait... you're approaching people who are new to computers and up until recently, apparently still thought they were a fad, by installing Ubuntu?

Man, you're a braver man than I... the world they're most likely to be interfacing with is going to be a Windows one, what's the reasoning behind Ubuntu?

» AlertThingy vs. Twhirl  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by lalindsey.

» 3G iPhone  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by designzillas.

Beautiful wide-screen and I couldn't even show anyone my own videos because of the Flash player.

What videos? I'm able to pull up everything you've got on YouTube under your account, no problems... and anything embedded here in Notes pops up without issue thanks to this.

» 3G iPhone  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by designzillas.

I've NEVER needed Flash functionality to the point where I felt I was being held back by the Mobile Safari app.

If I run into a blog that uses embedded video files or some such I simply load up my iTransmogrify bookmarklet and BAM, they work.

» So I Bombed Twitter on Friday...  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by markupninjas.

if he did it all day every day I think it would be funny for about a day and then I'd unfollow his feed and only talk to him in chat and forums like I do now.

I cut three people out of my twitter feed because they updated every 10 min ALL DAY EVERY DAY... to me, that was insane.

» 3G iPhone  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by designzillas.

...and it would coincide nicely with their 2.0 upgrade in firmware if it was announced in June.

I had a blast following it all day, and I got some looks in the office a few times when I got a pop up growl alert and literally LOL'd.

Good job on the funny Scrivs. ;)

» Flow released today!  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by carmodyarc.

Yeah I've heard people who share my dragging Transmit issue, but others like you who never seem to see it be slow.

I'm ALWAYS torn with Transmit... I've had it drop FTP connections in the middle of WordPress upgrades, stall on long uploads and then refuse to replace because of some locked temp file etc...

Just uploaded a large file I was having issues with... and Flow was fash, responsive and didn't burp like Transmit was doing.

Weird.

Flow released today!

Software Community — Posted: Apr. 4, 2008  ...   Last By: carmodyarc @ 9 months ago

I just got my copy of Flow 30 min ago and I've been running it through the ropes side by side with my favorite FTP application Transmit and I have to say, goodbye Transmit ol buddy.

Flow does everything I can do in Transmit a hell of a lot faster, but can quicklook almost any file I've run across so far, it has upload droplets that seem instantly connected to my server(compared to the 50 seconds it takes the Transmit widget to find, connect, open, upload and close to send a 100KB image), Flow took 15 seconds to do the same.

They also have live web preview so you can quick look an HTML file and see the code and how it renders. NICE.

Okay, come on -- seriously. Is this Virgle thing for real?
What, you doubt us? Well, yes -- Virgle is real.

oh, all right. Fine. April Fool's. Ha, ha, ha. It isn't real. There. Are you happy? Does it please you to drag us out of our lovely little fantasy world, to crush all our hopes and dreams? Is that really what you need to hear? Fine, you've heard it. Virgle isn't real.

Yet.

» About the Dust Bowl and Humans' Roles in Reversing Global Warming/Cooling/Climate Change  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by tds.

I'm not sure how many here have actually seen "An Inconvenient Truth", but like most theories it's always best to look at competing theories and compare the data and come to your own conclusions.

By far the best alternative theory documentary out there that I have see is the Great Global Warming Swindle. The title REALLY should be changed as it's not an anti-warming movie more than it is a film about solar impact and how data from folks like Gore is flat out misleading. It's only about an hour long.
