Skynet.
As predictable as meterologists.
Down 4 times a day.
And when it gets busy.
And when Apple releases a phone.
And...

I don't think Fake John Connor would be very happy about that though. He must be working to bring Twitter down as we speak.

Google wins for search engines.
Blingo.com wins for stacking prizes on top of Google search results.

Yes, Blingo is a referral link. It just means I win if you win. If you don't want to use it, don't. Blingo.com (no referral) will get you there as well.

» Have a Windows XP workgroup/domain question  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by peroty.

You should be able to get to any share on the laptop as long as they're on the same lan by typing \\computername into the address bar. It should then prompt you to login. Login as you and it should show you all the shares.

» Have a Windows XP workgroup/domain question  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by peroty.

The laptop can be on a domain OR a workgroup, but not both. You'll have to set both machines to Workgroups if they want to share like that.

Or you can just use the //LAPTOPNAME and get into the shares that way. And if you really need to get into the full machine, just slap a /C$ or DriveLetterDollarSign on the end as XP shares every drive unless you disable it. They're just hidden.

Example:

\\bryan\C$ <- your C drive shared

Good luck!

I knew Seagate bought Maxtor, but I thought I remembered a deal going down years ago where Maxtor and Western Digital got together in the consumer space.
I recall one selling their consumer HD business to the other, but my Google skills fail me (or perhaps it's my memory).

They're even putting "iTunes friendly copies" of movies on physical DVDs. From going through long, inconvenience to get a movie how you want it, we can now (will now) be able to simply slide a disc in and move the movie over.

We're really getting somewhere. And until Netflix gets their Watch It Now (which just went unlimited yesterday) service working on the mac, the iTunes Movie Rentals are going to be a dangerous thing. I have no problem dropping a couple bucks for a movie that I can port out to my projector.

After the initial 5 minutes (for me) to scan my mail, I've not noticed a hit in performance at all.

I've found the threading incredibly useful too. It also does a magnificent job grouping people together with other people they work with or share teams with which would probably not do 9r much good with three of you, but for the 150 people I deal with on-site it works wonders!

After a full day of solid use it's been wonderful and has done everything it said it would. :)

Xobni: There's hope for your outlook hell

Software Community — Posted: Jan. 10, 2008  ...   Last By: peroty @ 12 months ago

Late last night I ran across Xobni via Lifehacker and hopped on the opportunity to grab an account.

Xobni is a plugin for Outlook that provides

  • threaded messages
  • much faster search
  • finds and groups attachments
  • extracts phone number
  • email relationship analytics
  • The plugin takes a few minutes (depending on your mailbox size) to scan your messages then provides a breakdown of people you communicate with often, their phone number, recent attachments they've sent you and a threaded message view.

I work in IT for a GE call center and as a result I get hundreds of emails everyday. I've only been playing with this for a couple hours but already it's made my life easier trying to track down attachments I was sent a few weeks back.

I haven't used this long enough to give it a full and proper review but I am very excited so far as it has made filtering through the piles of email easier.

It's in a closed beta right now but I do have 5 invites. So if you're interesting (and one of the first 5 to email me) drop me a line to peroty@arcticpalace.org and I'll send one out to you.

I know this may seem like an ad but I don't get anything by talking about Xobni. It's just something cool I found and wanted to pass along. :)

Xonbi - amazing plugin for Outlook

» Should I get a Mac?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Johnny.

I'm pretty much done with my computer hacking days. I'd rather spend my time writing, and I'd rather just work with something which "Just Works", something that I can't necessarily say with Linux.

You just sold yourself a Mac right there. That is the same reason I bought myself a MacBook. I work in desktop support by day and was tired of fighting and hacking my PC at night. Ever since I've done nothing on the mac but code, write, and photoshop.

Hack-free enjoyment. You won't ever look back. And besides, the Linux PC doesn't have to go totally unloved. Use it as a backup or media machine. It can have a good life.

Renting data across the internet will fail. Every time.
No matter how many bright minds you have trying to lock down bits.
They're still just bits.
And there are 10x (at least) as many bright minds across the world that potentially want to use those bits as they see fit.

And yes elloithere, but that would require owning a stereo. Something I've not had since 2003. hehe

I hadn't even considered FireWire speakers, thanks macsterdam! Good idea!

» Should I buy Applecare?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

In a word, YES!

You do however have one full year (the MacBook's warranty) to purchase it if you don't want to plunk down the extra cash on day 1. But I would definitely get it! Especially with a portable, there's nothing like knowing it's covered. :)

Small is perhaps a bad word. Not huge might be better. Something to sit on the table next to my bed. I'm not looking for a full stereo setup or anything.

Speakers for the MacBook

Apple Community — Posted: Dec. 14, 2007  ...   Last By: peroty @ 1 year ago

I have a MacBook. I love it. Though it is too quiet. I need a decent set of speakers for it. I want to use them in my room in the evenings when I'm unwinding and listening to music or watching movies. What are you all using?

I am not looking for top notch quality at audiophile justified prices.

Wish List:

Small
Powered externally
Easy on the eyes is a plus

I used to have a set of Frog speakers I got from Woot but they broke in my last move.

So tell me you 9ruley bunch, what are you hearing through?

I bought the Apple Care on my MacBook the moment I bought it. Free repairs are better than paying. I would second Jesized's advice. Get it checked out elsewhere, at an Apple Store, if you can.

There are 3 Apple service places here and they all suck. Our Apple Store is awesome though. Some of the people there aren't the brightest, but the service people know their stuff and I've been them fix things I've been told were unfixable at the independents.
