I jumped up 20k places 'overnight'. I guess that's a good thing, but as Oli says, these tools will always have some kind of flaw and therefore inaccuracy. Nice to see overall trends though, if you're going up anyway.

» External Monitor for my Macbook!  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Ollie.

When I got my 15" MBP I also splashed out on a monitor, and like you aadil I was in a quandary as to what to go for. I eventually plumped for Dell purely on price. I got a Dell E228WFP 22" WideScreen Flat Panel Monitor (shown in your link) and have had no issues with it. It's cheap, decently sized and of good quality. It's not like it's even ugly or anything.

Electron Caught On Film For First Time

Science Community — Posted: Feb. 23, 2008

From the article:

With the use of a newly developed technology for generating short pulses from intense laser light, so-called attosecond pulses, scientists at the Lund University Faculty of Engineering in Sweden have managed to capture the electron motion for the first time.

Like Steven and shadowsun7 above, I dislike anything that interrupts my reading of the page. Be it Snap Previews or any ad that auto loads when your cursor rolls over it. Also, why don't website owners and advert creators realise that if we want to hear something, we'll turn the sound on? Stop auto-playing stuff. When I have 20 tabs open it can take a while to work out where the annoying noise is coming from that is disturbing my listening to music I have chosen.

Apparently, the universe is not black. Well, it is to the human eye, but according to scientists, it is actually beige.

» Are You Ordering Mac OS X Leopard?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by RightOn.

@karmatosed: I would have pressed for a free upgrade myself, given how much you spent at Apple recently. But then I don't know how long it will be before they automatically ship their products with 10.5 installed - that date may still be way off.

Are You Ordering Mac OS X Leopard?

Apple Community — Posted: Oct. 16, 2007  ...   Last By: RightOn @ 1 year ago

I see Apple plan on releasing Leopard on the 26th October. Have you pre-ordered or will you wait before updating? Will you join the queues at your local Apple store or do you not see the udgrade as being worth it?

I'm interested in your views as I've only just got used to MacOS (converted from Windows) and am wondering if updating now is really going to be worth it.

Humans Get 400mpg

Science Community — Posted: Oct. 12, 2007

How many miles per gallon of gas does a human get? One answer is zero - humans obviously can't convert the potential energy contained in gasoline into kinetic energy. That's a boring answer, though.

I'm pleased P4O is continuing, and I'll be going pink (as best I can) in October. Good luck Matt, hopefully everyone involved to make at least one more person more knowledgeable about breast cancer.

Paul Stamatiou talked briefly about temperature of the new MBPs when he reviewed them back in June. Link.

» Macbooks are so hot!  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by arthus.

My MacBook Pro runs quite hot at times. I've never measured the temperature, but on my lap it is quite warming. However, it has never cut out so I'm presuming it is okay. It is only the underside that gets hot, and placing it on the elevator helps a bit.

» RSS feed education - let's revisit some things  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by TechMalaya.

Subscribing to your own feed is the best advice I heard this year. I did the whole 'copyright message at the top of my feed' thing but was mortified when I viewed my own profile page here at 9rules. It was just a long list of "If you are not reading this in you feed reader..." messages. Same on Technorati, everywhere that pulled my feed for good, honest purposes. I quickly removed the message.

It is a catch-22, because you don't want people ripping your content and getting away with it, but in the same breath you harm the sites that try to do you good.

Somewhat complicated Dave, I must say, but a great shot. Your face is actually quite scary, almost as though it has a hole in the middle and you can see right through.

» Apple Therepy  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Bartoneus.

Great find Dave, I think a lot of us could do with this every now and then. What's the thing on the left of the shot causing the strange reflection? Looks like a head, but with the shop front instead of the face!

» What was the first Apple product you ever bought?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by JLosh.

» Pictures from the opening of the Glasgow Apple Store  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by LorriM.

Perhaps slightly off-topic, but not entirely:

I visited the Southampton Apple store for the first time on Friday. It seemed like a very different approach to retail. I only went in for a keyboard, but I saw employees really trying to help customers, guide them and actually show them what can be done on Macs - tutorials, printed guides to take away, 'Experts' where you can book a time for one-on-one help and of course, a plethora of machines to play with. You'd never see that in my local PC World.

And when I asked a bloke where to pay, he whipped out a portable thingy, said "right here", "printed receipt or emailed receipt", grabbed me a bag and actually did quite well at engaging me in decent conversation while he was waiting for my payment to process. I was actually impressed.

» Where do you spend most of your time on the web?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Adamfortuna.

I've been thinking about my usual 'online routines' recently in an attempt to make myself a bit more efficient. But I usually get caught up in my own site's admin writing and re-writing/working/structuring posts. Also spend a bit of time reading the Notes here and checking out the recent posts from other 9rulers. Google Reader is probably the other big time-consumer. Although I don't have too many subscriptions, a lot of the sites I read update quite regularly during the day.

» I'd make the switch, but...  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by shadowsun7.

I recently converted from Windows to Mac (actually Dell to Apple as well), and I don't think I'll ever buy a PC again. Sure, there are a few things that Apple could do to improve their MacBook range. But in the same breath, so could every other brand.

Regarding the right-click thing, if you convert it will be the least of your worries. There are ots of things that are different to Windows that you have to get your head around. It took me a couple of minutes to find the @ symbol when I first booted it. But these things soon become habit, just like they are with you and Windows.

I don't think my screen touches the keyboard, and as Rich says, applying pressure is not something you want to do too often anyway. And I don't think any in-built speakers in laptops are good. I always use headphones. I buy a stereo for music, a laptop for work and leisure.

So far I'm liking it. Twitter is very much for the moment. "What are you doing right now?", but Pownce seems to be more geared towards interacting with friends (as the note has a reply function). It has more functionality as well and just looks nicer, it will be interesting to see if people move over and leave Twitter.

Yep, I've found the site to be finally down as well. Lasted quite a while though, given the level of activity this evening...

» Trackpad on MacBooks  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

It doesn't pick up my palms interaction when I'm typing (though my palms rarely touch the keyboard, perhaps more of a testament to the thin design of the whole machine.)

I am in the process of converting (ordered), and honestly, this is music to my ears. I am really pleased that Apple appear to have this element right. I'll still use a mouse mind, but probably out of habit. But while travelling, a decent trackpad is important.

Nope, I've never used a decent trackpad on a laptop.

» Effect of temperature on human intelligence  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by westleydang.

I have no scientific data or even knowledge, but from my own experience of working in pretty darn cold places, and spending time in pretty darn hot places, my mind works better in the cold. I am more alert to the dangers of the environment I'm in, despite actually being in considerable danger when it's hot. For some reason, my mind doesn't always register hot as being dangerous?

Besides, hot weather/temp just makes me want to be on the beach, beer in one hand, stick in the other. And that doesn't facilitate a productive mind.

» Microsoft sucks  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by hthth.

...make sure the really important pieces of functionality are flawless before making it button-less and look fancy.

Can't argue with that. As something I hold and move every single day, it HAS to be functional and comfortable. I guess that's why I stayed with Logitech all these years, they always seemed to be just about right for me. They have their fancy crap designed 'for gamers' and the like, but really all I want is a simply comfortable mouse. I'll probably check Microsoft out, other people have recommended them to me previously, but in all likely, I'm probably gonna revert to me trusty pointing device that has served me well over the years.

To bring the thread back to track, "Microsoft Sucks". Well yes, it does. But the company is pretty big, has and continues to control a market relatively well (for itself), and is able to get away with doing things less well than others (or less well than it should really do) because of its stature and position. Having said that, I just placed an order at the Apple shop and will selling the laptop to the better half. I have had enough of Windows.

» Microsoft sucks  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by hthth.

I've been using Logitech for the last umpteen years and have been meaning to try something different just to see if I am missing out on anything. Maybe I'll try a Microsoft one as you had faith in them at one point?

Personally speaking, I'm pleased to finally see what my site looks like in Safari (along with ~3% of my visitors), and I'm pleased it looks okay. Not that the code is much good, just complete fluke. But still a smiley day.

And yes, Apple working on Windows users is undoubtedly a good thing. Makes me want to make the big conversion even more...

Actually I second a call for help on this. If been considering moving to another host that provides everything I've had previously for a little less with more "happy customers", but each time I get around to do it, I sort of chicken out because I don't think I'm knowledgeable enough, yet.

Is it really as simple as backing up the tables in the DB, and then uploading them into a new DB on the other server and then point everything in the right direction?
