» WordPress 2.6 Available  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by JoeLencioni.

I was really stumped by this one. Didn't 2.5 just come out with a lot of oompah?

I just set up a site for my girlfriend - yup, still going strong, hence the recent silence ;) - and I'm not looking forward to spending time on this.

Sure, it's not rocket science, but think of Murphy. She needs the site to be live 100% from next week because she's got a booth at some big fashion fair, and all the press, PR and invites are about to go out... I think I'm skipping this, or at least waiting a couple weeks.

Although, I do like that Google Gears feature... and that quick post feature... and...

/*heads to wp.org and begins download*/

;)

» Developers Bailing on Twitter  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by rileycentral.

It's like with the economy: if you stop believing, it'll fall apart. Still, I'm not sure what else is there. Twitter going down would see a lot of people migrating to Friendfeed, a couple perhaps back to Pownce or Jaiku.

True about the iPhone though. I don't have one, but I'm not aware of any microblogging platforms that are designed for it. Perhaps if the Google/Android or the Nokia/Symbian/Plazes thing takes off, we'll see a big shift there.

That said, I agree that Twitter was never engineered for generating traffic, and expecting that from it is an unrealistic position.

Of course, Twitter doesn't seem to be engineered for anything at all. It doesn't even seem engineered at times, so perhaps, if it tumbles (which I wouldn't like), what of it?

The Education of Geeks and Freaks

It is easy to forget that the future of web design rests in the hands of a small group of people—those with responsibility for educating the next generation. Columnist Tom Green reports on the sad state of post-secondary education, and what it might mean for the future of effective web development.

A bit late to join this perhaps, but

Final words of warning to everyone: stay away from Joomla.

Kudos and points for that my man. I hate Joomla with a vengeance.

As for the issue at hand, I've always liked WP (both the CMS as the .com service) and set up some sites with it that aren't blogs and, out of the box, it "worked for me" — as Kami says.

Tried Texpattern, looked at MT and heard lotsa good stuff about Drupal — it's Belgian and Dries is from my home town, so there's some pride mixed in that :)

If there's one thing I dislike about WP is that a lot of people seem to rave about it because it's WP and because Mullenweg seems like a cool guy. That reeks of ego worshipping and of "trying to be cool by liking WP because everyone says that's what you should do" more than anything else.

» Adobe Launches Acrobat.com, Google and 37signals Go Hmm...  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Nils.

I never expected Adobe not to be serious about anything. They've been on a roll with AIR and while Photoshop Express did take some flak from the critics, they're certainly headed in the right direction.

Still I think this war over the RIA and the online collaboration tools is far, far from over. I especially wonder whether companies are in fact ready to switch to yet another mode of file and document sharing (given that they've even embraced the idea altogether).

I don't see my boss, who's slowly accepting that Live or Google do have their merits, saying: "K folks, quick, all moving over to Acrobat.com now!"

As a web and tech geek, I do love what's going on though. It's a-movin and a-shakin!

» The Future Of Twitter  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Oli.

The funny thing is that Twitter's almost become like email or IM. Most of its heavy users have it on all day, rely on it and get Cut-Off Syndrome when it's down.

There really hasn't been a service like that before. Even if Facebook were to disappear tomorrow, it'd be Twitter we'd all be talking about it. Without that, it's like the cable guy disconnected your internet — deep space.

So, while I have no idea how they'll fix these troubles they've been having, I'm sure from a user perspective, people are willing to put up with a lot more before they flock to somewhere else.

Twitter, it's like the new cigarettes...

Recently, Hype Machine. I have it open almost all day, discovering and listening to new music.

» Saying 'Thank you' & Chawlk Development  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Mike.

Hey, there. Not a problem. I don't always reply to points either. But it's true, the message system could be worked on. I know I hardly ever use it because of that.

And, indeed, note bumping may not be frowned upon over here all that much (within reason, I suppose) but it's not always something you're prepared to do.

But I did just notice the profile pages are looking great now, so I'm sure features will be added soon enough. Cheers!

» I Can't View Flash Sites Now  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by RightOn.

Not sure, but the latest Flash update has upset quite a few people.

Have you tried reverting to a previous, non-buggy, flash version?

I wrote this post regarding the matter. It's mostly about the issues I was having (w/sound) but it seems there is a lot more that's wrong with 9.0.115.0... Hope it helps.

If it does have to do with previously unnoticed bugs, this is quite disturbing. A lot of people are going to want to have an eye-to-eye with Adobe....

Ha ha, I guess you're right about that. Sometimes you just need to yank out the plug and step back.

» FriendFeed Profiles  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Cas.

Perhaps we need an app that doesn't just group all the stuff but says something like: "Hey, it's been a while since you checked out x's Flickr stream but he just put up this pic now that got quite a few comments by some of your other contacts".

I know I need one of those.

» FriendFeed Profiles  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Cas.

I heard. I wonder how much "Google" there still is in there. They have a Blogger blog, which might be a coincidence, but which isn't regarded as a very "corporate" thing to do — unless you're Google anyways.

But like I said, I do like it so far.

» FriendFeed Profiles  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Cas.

Well, it went into public beta today.

My first reaction was "oh no, not another one" but I already like it and there's a lot I haven't discovered yet.

Not to toot my horn or pimp my wares, but for those unfamiliar with it, I just posted a rather exhaustive review.

But you can also just do a Google Blog search, because this thing is blazing.

Here's my FriendFeed stream.

Glad you like it.

Me too lovinnit.

» Digg Killer?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Nils.

Newspond is the type of site you check in 3-4 minutes to find out whats going on

See, that's what I meant. I get lost in Digg and Techmeme these days — because I'm busy, not because I'm old LOL!

I'm actually glad the RSS is still dodgy. Makes me actually go there and look at the pretty things.

I'm writting this on an Eee PC on the train

That's priceless. Thanks for adding to the Note Ian.

» Digg Killer?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Nils.

Like I said, if that "AI" they have, this "Buoyancy Rating", does the job, it might.

Of course, within a few weeks it may be as big a mess as Technorati is of course. Only better-looking :D

Perhaps I should sleep over it and see how it looks in the morning.

» Digg Killer?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Nils.

The sheer volume, the high technicality at times, the update speed... No idea really. Just that those sites always seemed, well, just too much to cope with. This seems... quieter?

LOL, I suppose they just did a great job to make it look... attractive. Because, indeed: great job for just two guys. Then again, there's only three of you and look at all the awesome content you're churning out on how many sites is it by now.

Also true: Digg killer it won't be; perhaps just an alternative to the hype. And if their AI does the job well, why not?

Digg Killer?

Web Community — Posted: Feb. 20, 2008  ...   Last By: Nils @ 10 months ago

No, prolly not, but when I just came across Newspond I immediately made it my start page. See how that works out for a while.

It looks gorgeous (check out the About), it claims to have no editors (perhaps they mean nasty scripts that block anyone acting funny and censor stuff they don't like - someone must work the behind-the-scenes machinery, right?) and it has no voting.

Yay! Now that is a great relief.

So, thoughts about this? Are you using it, going to?

To me, it looks like it could become an interesting resource for tech news. Just check the main posts a couple times a day. Stay up-to-date but from a safe distance. I can see that.

You know, when I first started using RSS a couple years ago, I actually had my feed reader (Ziepod back then) show pop-up alerts and I actually subscribed to the full feed of Techmeme and the likes. I know better now. This looks like something I can handle.

And there's no trolls. Yet.

Microsoft/Yahoo just made my day

Microsoft Community — Posted: Feb. 1, 2008  ...   Last By: RightOn @ 11 months ago

I don't care too much about the Microsoft bid towards Yahoo.

Other than that after years of running from anything MSN-related, I'll now have to pack up of course, become a refugee, and shift my Flickr pics to Zoomr and my del.icio.us bookmarks to Magnolia or whatever.

I do care about the possible job loss, I wonder about the need for these millions being spent, and wonder who the people are who really get richer from this...

But the best thing?

I was at work, Twitter caught the takeover buzz, I read-up on it, I blogged it for our tutorial site and submitted the article to the local digg-clones so we get some more exposure.

All part of the job now and, man, it's the best feeling in the world.

Okay, end of self-centred rant, and yes, now you can go on and discuss how you feel about this yourselves ;)

» Recommended Mac Apps?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by dhjones.

Just some of the basics I'm afraid:

Adium (IM)
Camino (browser)
NeoOffice (seconded from Hrafn)
GIMPShop (GIMP for Mac)
Smultron (HTML/CSS editor)
Conversation (IRC)

iTunes? :)

Just a couple I use, not necessarily the best. And they don't look for houses, so sorry.

I'm mostly an online guy, though; don't have many apps...

But have a browse through the Apple downloads page. There's tons there.

» Pidgin IM  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by archangelchuck.

Been using Pidgin for about three days now and I love it.

Of course, I don't use IM other than for text messages, not Skype or other voice.

I also don't get how I appear to others sometimes, but I suppose I still have to figure that out.

» Pidgin IM  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by archangelchuck.

I've always found Trillian to be rather ugly and, to be honest, not very intuitive. So when checking out alternatives this weekend, I actually decided to go for Pidgin at work. I'm installing it tomorrow, instead of GTalk.

At home, of course, it's Adium, but I noticed the two link to each other so to me that sounds rather promising.

» What Feed Reader Do You Use?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by MattBernstein.

I'm on several machines and OSs so I use GReader exclusively.

Tried Vienna once, looks great, but yeah, no sync with work so that sux.

As for not being able to auto-update, I've no problem with that: counter's eternally stuck at 1000+ unread items so I always have something to read.

» Why do people say it's natural for man to assume the Sun went round the Earth?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Oli.

Maybe it also has something to do with preconceptions clouding our perceptions as we grow up (apart from inevitable egocentricity and the failure to see what's right in front of us).

I saw something on TV the other day I thought was funny.

In Holland they asked little girls the same age of the now four-year old crown princess there, what would the princess become in the future.

Instead of thinking years and possible societal upheavals ahead - and replying "queen" - one of the little girls answered quite rightly: five.

We boring grown-ups don't think like that anymore.

» Gmail Constantly Crashing Firefox  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by seowebdesign.

Certain FF addons do crash when used with GMail. I know of Firebug and Flashblocker but no doubt there are more.

I tried to do a quick search for a list but wasn't that successful, sorry.

That would mean, you'd have to read through all of the Mozilla documentation or switch them all off and try each one separately...

Or maybe some FF Ninja will come along here and just help you out. I'd definitely not be surprised, however, if that turned out to be the issue.

» How do you capture screen shots?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Chris24.

@Noel: no, in Windows, as far as I know, when you need anything beyond Prt Scr, you need an app.

I used ScreenHunter for a while and was happy with that. Also, there is SnagIt, by the fine people of Techsmith, but that costs 40 bucks. I hear it's great and obviously you'd get support, but unless you need all sorts of high-end features (and some video support), I'd go for ScreenHunter.

Update: also, SnagIt works with Vista, ScreenHunter doesn't appear to yet.

» How do you capture screen shots?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Chris24.

Well, I actually have this from Hrafn, but if you press Cmd+Shift+4 and then hit the space bar, you select the active window only. Then click and you have a perfect window screenshot, neat rounded corners and all.

I can't remember what I used back on Windows but there are tons of good little apps on download.com...

Update since Rich posted at the same time I did: this just leaves you with a pdf or png you still have to resize or upload of course. No fancy Flickr integration.

Thanks, that link looks great.

I subscribed. No, wait... d'oh!

» Feed Overload  ...  Last Reply: 12 months ago by publicenergy.

I need that button. The past few days, I've been seeing nothing but 1000+ in my feed reader. Glad Google doesn't show the exact number of unread posts once you hit the 1K mark.

Feeds aren't e-mail? That's an interesting concept. I should remember that.

So, did you press it?

@techmalaya That's kind of odd. I use my del.icio.us network and my Google shared items for that.

Then again, no one actually reads those, I guess, so putting them on a tumblelog makes sense.

If only Tumblr would just incorporate search (without having to add whatever code).
