Dinosaur Goes On Rampage of Learning And Enlightenment

I think if I were a kid and I saw this it would stick with me for the rest of my life and probably force me to become some sort of paleontologist. As an adult now I'm insanely jealous of those kids. Be warned, this is totally awesome. Look closely and you'll see what's going on.

This happened in the LA Museum of Natural History.

Using Awk To Generate C-Code On The Fly

Programming Community — Posted: Jul. 21, 2008

His solution is to use .NET’s ability to generate code on the fly. When you’re writing your program for manipulating images, you can’t necessarily write code like you could for someRidiculousFunction(), but you can have your program generate code that works that way, in which case you can avoid the tedious if statements and looping, and just generate mountains and mountains of procedural code.

Rutgers Grad Student Finds New Equation For Generating Prime Numbers

Science Community — Posted: Jul. 21, 2008

So many people have worked on the prime numbers that it seems unlikely that there could be a simple prime-generating function that has been overlooked until now.

Rutgers graduate student Eric Rowland has defied the odds, however, and has found a new one. In a paper just published in a journal I edit, the Journal of Integer Sequences, Rowland defines his formula and proves it generates only 1's and primes.

I'm just saying that the apps in the Social Networking category don't appeal to me and don't solve any huge issue I'm currently having in my social life. They also don't want to make me tell my friends about them which is the entire goal of the developers... to get as many downloads as possible.

Apple's App Store Offerings Still Have A Long Way To Go

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 14, 2008  ...   Last By: Ozone42 @ 4 months ago

At the end of this article, I started getting into why most of the Social Networking apps I've downloaded have gotten the axe and it's simple: what they think I want is the opposite of what I want.

Most of the offerings in this category revolve around the idea that I want to be connected with all my friends at all times, knowing detailed information about their whereabouts, feelings, or current status. There are many problems with his:

  • Most of my friends don't have iPhones
  • The ones that do would all have to coordinate and use the same app
  • I don't live in a huge city so none of my friends are going to be in a 3-5 mile radius of where I'm currently at, prompting me to walk over and meet them if they're in a little circle on a map
  • I don't really care what they're doing, if I did, I'd be giving them a call

Am I the only person who doesn't feel the need to be connected to everyone at all points of the day? Maybe that same feeling is what makes me post to Twitter so infrequently, the concept of not really caring or wanting to share.

Apple's App Store Offerings Still Have A Long Way To Go

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 14, 2008

The concept of the App Store is fantastic and will be a revolution in mobile content, delivery, and usage, but the issue that I had been worried about all along reared its ugly head the instant I started browsing.

Most of the App Store apps are shit. Useless. Poorly-designed. Shit.

» Mobile web reaches critical mass  ...  Last Reply: 3 months ago by hthth.

The interesting thing about "the mobile web" is that devices that display web content on them, that fit in your pocket, aren't nearly as limited as "the mobile web" played them to be back when technologists were discussing this next, new wave. I was also hesitant to dive deep into mobile development in years past because I knew that technology would get better and the limitations I'd be designing for would either change or be eliminated in short order.

Ozone, I'm glad you got yours updated. Lots of people are having issues.

If you haven't downloaded the Bloomberg app yet, I highly recommend it. It beats the hell out of the buggy NY Times app and the light-text-on-black-background theme is far easier to read.

Ouch, now ABC News is running with an iPhone activation horror story. I feel for everybody who can't fully use their new iPhone 3G or OS 2.0 yet and am extremely glad I did the manual update last night. OS 2.0 for the win!

Haven't used Loopt yet, seems to be a more useful app if you're in a major metropolitan area.

» iTunes 7.7 Is Live, Browse The App Store  ...  Last Reply: 4 months ago by publicenergy.

Just a quick note for my Jailbroken brethren. Last night I went into iTunes and downloaded the 1.1.4 update, then made sure to fully back everything up before restoring. I had a Jailbroken version of 1.1.1 and the process took about 30 minutes from start to finish. Make sure to get all your legitimate iPhone ducks in line before trying any fancy App Store stuff or who knows what will happen.

(Note: I have no idea if this process will work correctly with Unlocked iPhones running on different networks so if you're one of those people, I'm sure you're already aware of the issues.)

iTunes 7.7 Is Live, Browse The App Store

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 10, 2008  ...   Last By: publicenergy @ 4 months ago

If you're on a Mac and haven't grabbed the latest version of iTunes yet, head over to Software Update and give it a download. The newest version of iTunes is 7.7 and it allows you to head over to the App Store and browse the available goodies that you'll be able to move over to your iPhone or iPod touch very soon. Some iTunes links (click once you've got 7.7 loaded up):

  • All iPhone Apps (if you want to view the main App Store screen, click "App Store" at the top.
  • Twitterrific is looking very, very nice as a native iPhone app (I've had the Jailbroken version for awhile.) It's a free download that's ad-supported via The Deck, and $9.99 if you want the ad-free version.
  • Evernote for the iPhone will be pretty handy for hardcore users. I was in the Evernote beta and never really started using it, but the concept was pretty neat.
  • OmniFocus is finally here on the iPhone and is a $19.99 purchase. Most of the other apps I've poked around and seen are cheaper but if you're a hardcore GTD (Get Things Done) kinda person, this might be a worthwhile purchase. That, you know, or some paper to write things down on.
  • Loopt is one of the few companies to be backed by the effervescent iFund so it will be interesting to see how they grow their model since the app is a free download.
  • Salesforce Mobile looks like it might be a hit with enterprisey sales folks who love their iPhones. Will it be enough for companies to outfit their sales staff all with iPhones? Time will tell.
  • And here's a shocker for ya: MySpace's iPhone app looks a lot more feature-rich and well-designed than the Facebook equivalent. Good on ya, MySpace.

This is nowhere near an exhaustive list of the interesting apps I've seen, but it should get you started with some familiar-sounding downloads. One of the interesting things I've noticed is that it's highly beneficial for your iPhone app name to start with a letter very close to the start of the alphabet. With so many apps out there, people will be pouring through the categories (Photography, Business, Games to name a few) and the apps are listed alphabetically. iFunded startup Whrrl seems to already be at a loss since they're not on the first page of the Social Networking category.

Apple Hands Out Someone's Apple ID Password To Phisher

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 8, 2008  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 4 months ago

I honestly can't believe that someone at Apple was stupid enough to actually let this slide through. How stupid do you have to be to blatantly hand over someone's credentials to a new email address that has someone else's name as part of the address?!

This is a serious offense and I hope security people descend upon this person's issue and tear Apple a new one. I'm as big of an Apple fan as you will encounter, but this is ridiculous and no amount of fanboyness will stop me from getting pissed off about this situation. Handing over an Apple ID allows someone to access many things, one of which is your iTunes account. I wonder what would've happened if this nefarious individual had purchased a few thousand dollars worth of albums? What would Apple's recourse be then?

Apple Hands Out Someone's Apple ID Password To Phisher

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 8, 2008

I tried to log in to Apple Developer Connection this morning to find out that my password had been changed and the email associated with my account was now a yahoo.com address that wasn't mine. Luckily, my "security question" was still the same, so I was able to reset the password and email address back.

Based on the emails that have appeared in my .Mac mailbox, this was accomplished by sending this classy one-liner to Apple:

am forget my password of mac,did you give me password on new email marko.[redacted]@yahoo.com

» How Twitter could be worth nothing in a year  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Ozone42.

I'm not going to beat around the issue here... the people in charge of running and building a business with Twitter are idiots. Plain. Old. Idiots.

There are probably a half dozen ways that Twitter could make revenue, starting tomorrow. They have openly said that they will not ever serve ads, so there goes a few options. Their stability sucks so much that offering a higher-level of service uptime for $$$ is gone too. They just keep shooting themselves in the feet, over and over. Twitter could have been making money all along but they gave away the cow and the milk and it's hard to take that back.

Keep Your Original iPhone As A WiFi-Enabled iPod

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 2, 2008  ...   Last By: Oli @ 5 months ago

I'm actually really surprised that AT&T would let people do this. Cellphone companies are always trying to milk users out of every dollar they have, so letting "old" iPhones still exist without AT&T activation or a contract is pretty cool.

So you can check your email, download iPhone apps via the App Store, do the iTunes thing, and essentially have yourself an iPod touch.

Of course the flipside of this issue is that if AT&T deliberately made your old iPhone unusable as soon as you deactivated it in favor of a new 3G one, the masses would be at their doors with pitchforks.

Apple Community — Posted: Jul. 2, 2008

Original iPhone owners who prefer not to give away their old iPhones after upgrading to an iPhone 3G can instead keep their devices and use them as WiFi-enabled iPods, AT&T has confirmed.

How To Clean A Scratched CD With A Banana

Technology Community — Posted: Jul. 1, 2008  ...   Last By: eXctrik @ 5 months ago

This really makes me wish I had a scratched CD to use this technique on.

So the science behind it: I imagine the goal is to make the laser not reflect wildly off a scratch, but instead, get absorbed into the goo from the banana. I have absolutely no CD repair engineering courses under my belt but it makes sense to me... sorta.

How To Clean A Scratched CD With A Banana

Technology Community — Posted: Jul. 1, 2008

  1. Peel the banana
  2. Rub the banana on the CD in a circular motion
  3. Use the underside of the peel and rub the banana in deeper
  4. Wipe away the residue with a lint-free cloth, like you’d use to clean your car windows
  5. Using another cloth, remove smudges with a spritz of Windex
  6. Voila, she is like new!

» Google learns to crawl Flash  ...  Last Reply: 4 months ago by Ozone42.

I think the problem with this lies in how Google crawls the SWFs. If they're just pulling out an abundance of plaintext then it's essentially useless because there's no meaning behind the data. If there's a way to attach semantic meaning to Flash information (when developing the SWF) then it will be useful.

I don't know if there's already a way to do this within Flash... any Flash developers want to chime in?

Tyme's definitely got a point about people at work not having control over their installed browser. IT departments may be lazy but it's not the users' fault, they have to deal with whatever decisions are made by other departments.

People following you on Twitter could think of it as an RSS feed for your personal life and thoughts. I'm a little frightened by the amount of people who follow me on Twitter so now I try to think twice before posting (whenever I actually do post) because in head there's "more on the line" when people are actively listening.

» Apple pays their engineers significantly less  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

I think engineers who wish to work at Apple are doing it because they're obsessed with Apple technology and products, perhaps enough that they're willing to take a pay cut to do so.

Another thing to think about is that Google engineers and Apple engineers do very different things. Apple engineers are writing Objective-C and Cocoa, developing operating systems and desktop-based software, whereas Google engineers are writing C++, Java, or Python, tweaking algorithms for the search application or web-based software. I'm not saying that one job function should pay more than the other, but it's two very different types of jobs for an engineer. I'd suspect that Apple engineers used to writing desktop applications in ObjC are less likely to hop over to the web app world at Google and completely switch over to Python. Two very different skillsets.

Now Microsoft and Apple would be a fairer comparison, but the cost of living between Redmond and the Bay Area is pretty different so a comparison might be tough.

Nice Diamond, Is It Real Or Just Kinda Real?

Science Community — Posted: Jun. 18, 2008  ...   Last By: shadowsun7 @ 5 months ago

I remember reading a great article about this topic a few years ago saying that the technology is "coming up fast". Lo and behold in 2008, it's here. Lab-made diamonds are now virtually indistinguishable from natural diamonds. Boy, does this bring up a lot of questions.

  • If a 1-ct natural diamond costs a few thousand dollars, and a man-made one costs a few hundred, which does a man/woman choose when buying for his or her spouse?
  • If you choose the man-made one, do you tell the spouse?
  • Would the spouse get pissed off that you "cheaped out" and got a man-made diamond even though the quality is the same?

I'm using the sexually-indeterminate forms of pronouns here but we all know how this will go over with the ladies. Diamond engagement rings might go out of style faster than the dodo died off, so now what would be the most precious thing to put on your beloved's finger? Depleted uranium?

Scientists Create Life From Nothing

Very, very interesting.

This child's model of a cell drifted in the chemical soup that created it until the correct nucleotides were absorbed and allowed it to replicated the DNA.
If it sounds hideously unlikely, be aware that some Harvard researchers, including Harvard Medical School's Jack Szostak, have managed exactly that.

» Qik on the iPhone  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Tyme.

iPhone has always supported video and I believe there was a third-party video recording application out within a couple weeks after the iPhone was initially jailbroken and a working compilation toolchain was put together. AT&T and Apple reps are only going to respond to the built-in uses of the phone so that's probably why they told you what they did. There are SDK-based recording apps being put together now that will support greater than 10fps recording based on some unique compression algorithms, so that will be interesting to see once they go live.

A watermelon is used for eating but it doesn't mean you hit it with a baseball bat and make it explode. Watermelon salespeople aren't going to pitch you the second usage, but it doesn't mean you can't do it.

Computing the Ten Millionth Bernoulli Number In Mathematica

Science Community — Posted: Jun. 13, 2008

But a few years ago I programmed a quite different algorithm into Mathematica. Instead of directly computing the Bernoulli numbers using a recurrence relation, I instead used a trick recently suggested by Bernd Kellner: computing Bernoulli numbers by computing the Riemann zeta function.
It’s the integrated nature of Mathematica that makes things like this practical. Without Mathematica, one has to use the simplest building blocks to make efficient algorithms. But with Mathematica, one can take for granted access to efficient very-high-level operations—like computing Riemann zeta functions.

Great Article Discussing The Cost Of A Bugfix In Webkit

Programming Community — Posted: Jun. 13, 2008

Every fix doesn’t call for a blog post, but this one deserves it. It all started when Jonathon Jongsma found a way to make text disappear in QtWebKit on May 27th. So he raised a bug. He and I started working on fixing it. We rapidly found that WebKitGtk was also affected, but it was unreproducible on the Mac port.

He ends up talking to the engineer at Apple who committed the code that ended up causing the bug and they fix it together. Pretty interesting read.
