» Pidgin IM  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by archangelchuck.

I always thought that Trillian was too hard to use and if I remember correctly it sorta messes up your system. If Trillian was the only piece of software out there I would use it but it is not so I use Pidgin.

» Pidgin IM  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by archangelchuck.

Pidgin is a terrific piece of software. Supports multiple IM protocols and is extremely light weight. Or you can use the traditional AIM client. I don't recommend Trillian.

I would honestly just like the meta data so I could go get the song later.

» Flickr Vs. Picasa  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by aspraveen.

Picasa seems a lot like webshots except with the google name and desktop application.

The flickr community in my mind is more aimed towards a photography enthusiasts. You see a lot of scenic photos or sceenshots.

» Please explain Facebook to me  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

I think what bugs people like you, Tyme, about Facebook is that there's nothing that revolutionary about Facebook. In fact one could argue that Mark there just got lucky and gained all the users. And that wouldn't be far off.

As for how we use Facebook. I think the simplest argument is the best. The people who are your friends are either frequent users of facebook or they are not.

» Please explain Facebook to me  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

I think you guys are being too kind. Facebook represents a part of our culture that is nosy. A rat race. We always want to know what our friends/enemies are up too and then laugh at them in private...too hash?

We put cool pictures of ourselves up to promote ourselves. Ask any college student and they'll tell you this. The point of facebook isn't to be online and be cool but rather to brag about your offline life.

I think that people make the mistake of thinking that Facebook is a tool for making new friends. Facebook simply enhances what you already have.

» Microsoft Invests In Facebook At 11-Digit Valuation  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by xirclebox.

This reminds me a lot of when Google made that 1% investment in AOL. Everyone thought that it was a bad idea but look at AOL now. Successful and using Google Search.

Perhaps Microsoft is trying to wrestle away control from Mark and divert Facebook on a path to profitability and less of what Mark thinks is cool.

» Microsoft releases Tafiti...sorry, can't stop laughing  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

Tyme: Most people aren't even aware that programs automatically phone home. And if Silverlight is a Microsoft product so...I guess in theory they could get the program to bypass the Windows Firewall.

No firewall alerts no nothing. Normal people would never know.

It seems to me as if Microsoft is just trying to experiment with Silverlight. We shall see.

» A Delay in Leopard: Apple Reacting to Vista  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

Yeah that will probably be the case for most people. I know I won't get Vista until I get myself a new computer. Which could be ages.

» A Delay in Leopard: Apple Reacting to Vista  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

But Ozone42, do dual booters represent the majority of the population. I think the major tech people will always be resistant to change whenever Microsoft releases a new operating system.

I always thought Paul Thurrott's explanation of Vista's criticism was the best.

Oh yeah now that you mention it, the other Mac OS X's had parental controls but you should really see the stuff they have in Leopard. Sick stuff. Website restrictions and everything.

I think that Vista is quickly becoming (weird sentence) adopted among the home consumer population. Businesses will take a while to make the upgrade but most of the people I hang out with already have Vista. A few bought it preinstalled but I know a few people who bought the upgrade package.

A Delay in Leopard: Apple Reacting to Vista

Apple Community — Posted: Aug. 7, 2007  ...   Last By: Michael @ 1 year ago

If we look at the features Leopard had before Vista you can see that Apple added a few features to compete with Vista.

- Parental Controls
- The Improved Finder and Search Party
- The Transparent Dock and Taskbar

I know it's not much but it might help to explain why Apple delayed Leopard. Love Vista or hate it but a widely adopted operating system like Vista sets the bar for future operating systems.

Well the 7th is rolling around. Place your bets. I personally hope that they have that new touch screen technology for the ipods. That would be swell.

In my brief experience, philosophy can be one of those subjects that are easily messed with. Very people "get it" and out of those people, there are very few people who practice what they preach.

But aside from that I think it is a pretty cool concept.

» Safari on Windows  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by creat1ve.

This probably has to do something with the release of the iPhone. They probably want to sync your bookmarks on Safari with iTunes and then with the iPhone.

Seems like a pretty smart idea to me.

» Yahoo Mail takes the lead  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Oli.

I think it comes down to time management and motivation. Most people aren't motivated enough to switch their webmail service. Sure I love gmail but let's say that Microsoft's Live Mail comes takes the lead in features.

Do I then switch over to Live Mail? Most people don't have enough time to make the switch and are used to using it.

» Songbird 0.2.5 Released: Support for iPod Synching  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by RightOn.

So how does that work? If I remember correctly, the size of the memory footprint is proportional to the size of the music library. It must work well for me because I have a small iTunes library.

» Songbird 0.2.5 Released: Support for iPod Synching  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by RightOn.

Right On: I know what you mean about the bird graphics. The people at Songbird are probably a bit eccentric. But that's okay.

Umm I'm just really surprised to see an application other than iTunes sync with the iPod. I thought they had that stuff locked down pretty tight. Is Apple going to sit still for this?

About the library playlist delete. I had no idea what happened there to be honest. I was just using it as an excuse to uninstall iTunes.

Songbird 0.2.5 Released: Support for iPod Synching

Technology Community — Posted: Mar. 6, 2007  ...   Last By: RightOn @ 1 year ago

I've gotta admit that I am pretty darn excited about this one. About three days ago, my install of iTunes decided to delete my entire playlist file. So I finally trashed my Windows install of iTunes (it always made my windows machine run slower anyway) and decided to try out the latest build of Songbird, which now supports iPod syncing through an add on.

Now I don't know if this has been done before but I think this is the first time that a non Apple media player has been able to sync up properly with an iPod and I gotta say that it works pretty darn well with the exception of a couple Japanese song title characters syncing properly.

I'm impressed and they managed to do it on all three platforms. Damn!

This sounds like what Facebook does with it's profile pages. When a piece of someone's profile is update, that part of the profile is highlighted in Yellow.

It's actually quite cool.

Raise Your Hand if You're a Windows User

Hi my name is Michael, I am in 9rules and I don't use a Macintosh computer. I use Windows XP...all the time. I like Windows. I know that for the programmers in the audience, that there are significant productivity benefits for owning a mac but for the average nerd like me, Windows is fine by me.

So if you are just visiting the 9rules notes sections and feel like your not a part of the crowd, I don't own a mac either.

» Selling or Buying a Blog  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Hedimac.

I don't think it occurs to most bloggers to sell their blogs in the same way that most people who write journals don't consider selling them as books.

» Got an iPod? Don't install Vista...yet  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by katundu.

I remember that Vista was having trouble with the Java Runtime environment that is used to run Open Office. I suspect that it is one of those things that Microsoft has on it's "low priority" list of things to do.
