» Is email dying?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Scrivs.

I can't really give any insight into this, because I've been using Gmail almost exclusively ever since I got an invite to it. Other than it being down three or four times for a couple of minutes, I've never had any problem with it at all. Out of the hundreds I get a week, occasionally one or two spam messages will make it to my inbox.

If we're talking usage, for me, email isn't dying. In fact, I'm probably using it more now than I was a few years ago.

» What Feed Reader Do You Use?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by MattBernstein.

I use Google Reader, which I've been using for a long while now. I started out with Bloglines, which I also soon discovered didn't suit my tastes. I hated that clicking on a feed marked every item as read. I moved on to other stuff, settling on FeedDemon for a short while. I found that I wasn't crazy about the desktop feed reader thing, so I went back online with Feedlounge. I loved Feedlounge - until things started just not working at all. It went downhill from there. In the midst of using Feedlounge, Google Reader had been released with a difference interface, quite a bit different than its initial launch, and so I gave it another whirl. It did what I wanted, was free, and worked.

So there I am.

Make a low-cost interactive whiteboard with a Wii remote

A friend of mine sent this to me this morning, and I found it too cool not to share:

The fellow's project page for this can be found here, where you can download the software and try it out for yourself.

» Gmail Constantly Crashing Firefox  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by seowebdesign.

I've been having some crash issues of late also, specifically after the "new UI" thingy. I'll try disabling my addons and see if that helps any.

» Please explain Facebook to me  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

I'm 23, I'm in college, and I still don't get Facebook. I've found friends; I've added them; and.. okay, now what? If I want to talk to them, I meet them on campus or send them an email.

So, Tyme, if you're "old," then so am I.

» OSX on Intel PC?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Josh.

I was able to install it a long while back on my AMD PC, but didn't have much luck with it. I believe I did it with VMware, but it's been so long, I honestly can't remember.

I was able to get it to boot up, get the login window, and log in. I was even able to poke around in the menus and stuff. However, I quickly gave up on it because it was so slow.

» Does "remember me" matter anymore?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by ace.

I dislike them, personally. I've found that (strangely), the sites I DON'T want to remember me do so; and the sites that I DO want to remember me fail repeatedly.

» How do you say it?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Esherido.

A response above made me want to clarify something: I'm well aware that X is the Roman numeral for 10. I still say "Oh Es Ex", though.

» Do You Use More Than One Computer?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Kamigoroshi.

2 desktop PCs at home. One is in my computer / library room upstairs; the other is downstairs and serves as a family PC. Do I need both? No, not really, but it's convenient.

Haven't found a need for a laptop or anything like that, even for school. There's tons of computer labs at the uni, and there are a few dozen computers in the library as well.

» Gmail adopts IMAP Protocol  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Apage43.

I think it's a great thing, whether I'm personally going to use it or not. I know there are a lot of folks who have been clamoring for IMAP support in Gmail for a long time; their day has come.

I might give it a whirl, but probably not. If I downloaded the messages into a client, I'd just feel like I needed to organize them into folders - which, when I can just search at Gmail, would be a bit of a waste o'time. It's not lke the labels could easily be converted to folders, either - in most clients, a message can go in ONE folder. I've got 2 or 3 labels on some messages.

Anyroad - yeah, tis' a good thing for those who want it. I've personally been enjoying the recent speeding-up of the storage increase. Mine's gone up something like a gig and a half in a little over a week. Somebody at Google is really moving their butt, hurling hard drives out into the server farms.

» How do you say it?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Esherido.

@oniTony: Your response, specifically "Panther, Tiger, Leopard", just made me realize something. The OS X releases share the same names as, of all things, German tanks. In WW2 the Germans fielded the Panther tank as well as the Tiger I and Tiger II (King Tiger); in '65, they started using the Leopard.

Strange, but interesting.

Anyroad - sorry for the thread hijack! (/disperses)

» How do you say it?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Esherido.

I don't think I've ever actually said it aloud (not being a Mac user, and not knowing anyone who uses it, I rarely "talk" about it), but when seeing it in text online, I've always read it in my head as "Oh Es Ex".

Oops?

» What HTML Editor do you use?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Chris24.

Another vote for Notepad++ for Windows. Great little app, and free. I use it when I'm going to have to be slogging through quite a bit of code; when I'm just making a quick edit, like changing a line or two of CSS, I'll often just use the file edit thing in cPanel.

» Apple.com Has No Default Button Designs  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by hthth.

Very cool find. I think it interesting that even though they're all different, I think anyone who's familiar with Apple could look at *any* of those buttons and say, "Those are on an Apple site."

» Thinking about switching hosts  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by peroty.

I don't use MT, but I thought I'd toss my suggestion in the hat: A Small Orange. Decent prices, and great customer service (which, thankfully, I've very rarely had to use, because stuff has "just worked").

And no, I don't get any kickbacks or anything for this suggestion, so you may take it safely. :)

I am expecting that, on the 7th of August, in due course, the 8th of August will follow.

(Hey, I'm not a Mac user [other than my iPod], so what'd ya' expect me to say?)

» Ubuntu users?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Josh.

I was dual booting it for a while, and while I liked it, ultimately, I scrapped it. Reason? Games. I could do all of the same stuff I could do in Ubuntu on Windows - except on Windows, I could also fire up my games. Didn't see much point switching back and forth repeatedly when Windows XP did everything I needed.

» Hosting Plans  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Josh.

Hope it works out well for you, amine!

» Hosting Plans  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Josh.

amine: I use A Small Orange for my site. Their plans don't look as great as plans from other hosts, but let's face it: when a host is saying you can have 50GB of space, 300GB of bandwidth, blah, blah, blah, they're overselling, by a lot. Let's see every user on a server actually USE all of that, and see how fast the sites work. That is, of course, assuming that the whole server doesn't melt...

ASO has a plan that has 1GB space, 25GB bandwidth/month, which is $10/month. Not quite what you were looking for, since the space isn't so high, but you might try emailing them and seeing if you could get a custom plan. I don't know what they charge for extra space off hand.

The service I've had from them has been pretty good. Fast responses with (generally) helpful answers.

Good luck!

Well, out of the actual IM applications, I prefer Google Talk. It does what its supposed to and that's it. None of the extra crap that, for example, the newest versions of ICQ are weighed down with.

I've not been on IM much lately though. When I *have* been on, it hasn't been through any application, really. I've fallen in love with Meebo. It lets me connect to all of the IM services at once, via a program I have up and running all the time: Firefox.

» How Many Feeds Are You Subscribed To?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by winnopeg.

Currently in Google Reader, I've got 67 feeds. Not too many. But, I've been adding quite a few lately, too...

As an aside, for those who haven't checked out the new Google Reader, you should. It's 1000x better than their initial attempt.

Show some PC love, darn it.

Looks like a cool program. That's about all I can say, since I can't run the app. Grumble, grumble.

My cell phone is my primary alarm clock. Much faster to set, and if the power goes off, it'll still wake me up.

Now, whether that's a good or bad thing really depends on the day we're talking about...
