» Should I buy the iPod Touch, if I already have a iPod nano 8gb 3rd generation?  ...  Last Reply: 2 weeks ago by jensized.

Also it says in iTunes that how much "media" can I sync into it and it says 7,4gb but it should be 8,0gb.

That .6 GB is the amount of space that the operating system takes up. You're rarely going to get usage of the entirety of the storage space it says is available on the box. The freezing when you sync with your PC seems more likely an issue with your PC than with the iPod.

If you just got your Nano 6 months ago and are having problems I would suggest taking it in or sending it off for repair, because it's still under warranty. Whenever I've had issues with my iPods the Apple Store has just replaced them.

That said, I think buying an iPod touch would be frivolous, especially for someone who's 13, has no money and has a Nano that's under warranty.

By a study that came out a few months ago. I think it's posted somewhere here, in fact.

Rich people are happier.
Rich people are often more likely to be conservative.

What is that, the commutative property? If a=b and b=c than a=c?

After reading this I get it. I think I was just overwhelmed because every note I clicked on took me to a totally different domain and I had to log in like four times.

If it were a tree Chawlk would be the trunk and the other sites would be the branches. Right?

My wired Mighty Mouse at work had the same problem this week. I used a Purell wipe, turned the mouse over and kind of, um, diddled the scroll ball with the wipe. After a few tries it was working fine.

» What Feed Reader Do You Use?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by MattBernstein.

For a while I would just view feeds in Safari but it got to the point at which I was subscribed to so many feeds it just became cumbersome. Then I used Vienna, which worked, but was a tad buggy and froze more often than I prefer. I didn't stress over it, but in a recent note about free programs for the Mac someone said mentioned NetNewsWire being better, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I started a Newsgator account so I could access feeds from my work (at newsgator.com) and home (in NNW) computers without having to skim over already-viewed content. It's a great solution for me and I find keeping up to be less of a hassle. The NNW app looks good (I like the choice of themes and views) and works well, and its web browser is head and shoulders above Vienna's. Also you can post links from it directly to your delicious and twitterrific, which is nice.

Cyberduck for FTP
Vienna for RSS feeds... I don't really like viewing them in Safari.

That's the biggest selling point for NOT getting one.

Why? I've gotten at least 52,594 great hours out of mine.

I say if you want one, go for it. It will bring you hours of pleasure.

» I'm not digging this whole "monopoly" thing Apple has going with the iPod...  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by Oli.

You can set your iPod to sync manually so then you can just drag and drop things from any library into yours. I grab things from folks all the time that way.

» Buying CS3  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by armen.

The price difference is nearly negligible but I'd say if you just need Ps and Ai, just go ahead and get the Design Standard package. You never know when you may need to use InDesign.

Maybe consider Pixelmator? It's only $60 and from what I'm told does most of what Photoshop can do. At least until you've got enough $$ saved up to take the plunge.

» Should I buy Applecare?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by estarla.

Here it's about $70 (USD) cheaper with the student discount.

Most Apple Stores I've been to are extremely lenient with the student discount. So many of the people who work there are students themselves and very sympathetic. Your sister could always say she is purchasing it for you as a gift and they will, more than likely, give her the discount, no questions asked.

» Should I buy Applecare?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by estarla.

Yes, a million times, yes.

Especially since you have a notebook. You're carrying around something that has spinning parts and no matter how well you treat it there is always a huge possibility that something will malfunction.

I take a very "murphy's law" attitude in the matter — if you buy the extended warranty, you won't have any trouble. But if you don't, you will, as soon as your factory warranty is up. It's just best to err on the side of caution when it comes to computers. I've heard far too many horror stories. If you can't afford it now, just wait until you can. You have a year.

I doubt they'll be willing to replace it if it's an obvious case of user abuse — if she dropped it from a counter, they'll be able to tell.

I've had too many shady experience with "independent Mac dealers" to the point that I have a blanket distrust for them all, "Apple-certified" or not. I'd get a second opinion and see if anything can be done before sending it to the junkyard.

For how long have you had your MBP? They've only been out for what, two years?

Let this be a lesson to you: APPLE CARE IS WORTH EVERY CENT.

wow this post really got off-topic.

How so? You posted that you thought the mouse should be changed, and the ensuing discussion concerned how the mouse could be changed.

» Apple, make up your mind  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by computerjoe.

I like my trackpad for scrolling, surfing, whatever but I definitely feel like I have more control drawing beziers with an external mouse.

I think an external trackpad mouse would actually be pretty awesome if it just combined a graphics tablet and a trackpad so that if you wanted, you could use your fingers for scrolling, clicking, etc and a stylus for design.

» Apple, make up your mind  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by computerjoe.

Grey plastic being ugly is probably a big factor, and I'm pretty sure cost is a factor too.

Plus I have a stainless steel desk and that thing gets COLD. I'd hate to put my palm on a frozen mouse first thing in the morning.

» Please explain Facebook to me  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Michael.

I like Facebook. My use for it has changed since I graduated from college but as with anything Facebook is useful if you choose for it to be.
Two big things that make it invaluable to me:

Tools for students
When I was in college Facebook (or "the Facebook" as it was then) had not yet opened to the public. I entered in all my class sections and could click on the courses I was taking and see a list of my classmates. More than once if I missed class or didn't get some notes, what did I do? Shoot somebody from that class list a Facebook message. A lot of the clubs I was in in college had Facebook groups they used as a way to communicate with members.

Relationship upkeep
I wouldn't know anything about my high school crew if not for Facebook. Everyone's spread out all over the world now and things like the Activity Feed help us to keep up with each other. Beyond looking up names and snooping through profiles we've actually used Facebook to schedule meetup events for when folks have come into town. It's easier than sending out mass e-mails that usually don't get read and calling 30 people on the phone. I also wouldn't know anybody's birthdays if not for Facebook.

If you set your privacy settings correctly, as most of the people I know do, nobody can find out things about you that you don't want them to know. It can be a valuable portal for your connections online and offline.

Jark that's actually a really logical explanation. I can deal with that.

» Anyone Installed Leopard Yet?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by greghickman.

Finally I can be logged in to .Mac and AIM at the same time in iChat. About time. New dock will take some getting used to since the reflections make it a bit harder to see what's open, and I'll have to seee whether I want to start using Mail for RSS or stick to Vienna. I think Spaces will be a huge help at work, but not so much on my MacBook.

Worth standing in the rain for thirty minutes and the free t-shirt, so far.

I'll be installing mine in the car in the Apple Store parking lot.

I bet if they go to eleven (unintentional Spinal Tap reference, sweet!) they'll go back to using numerals.

How do you say it?

Apple Community — Posted: Oct. 24, 2007  ...   Last By: Esherido @ 1 year ago

How do you pronounce the name of the Mac OS?

I've always said "oh ess ten" since that's how Steve Jobs pronounces it, but I hear so many people call it "oh ess ex." Including a guy in my office who used to work at the Apple Store! It makes me crazy.

My logic is since it follows System 7, and OS 9, which are both numbers, X refers to 10 as the roman numeral. Not the letter. Where is the confusion?

Anyone feel the same way I do, or am I overreacting?
