» Alarms on the iPod touch  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by bioneural.

Just want to point out, alarms can be set through to go through the headphones or any external audio source you have connected. So, your iPod could be used to wake you up if you connected it to something before you went to sleep. It could also be useful for reminders and such if you were in an office environment or whatever, and had your touch connected to a speaker dock or something during the day.

Coming from a Palm device for PDA functions, I don't really find the missing useful speaker a huge loss. I never used the alarms to begin with because I was always at school or in some environment where it wouldn't be socially acceptable to have an alarm sound. So, it's no big deal for me.

What is a big deal is the PDA functionality is spot on and will get even better with the SDK later this month. Having one device that is both great as a PDA and great as an MP3 player has been perfect for me.

» Alarms on the iPod touch  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by bioneural.

To answer your questions, yes there is a speaker on the iPod touch. However, it's a low output, beep-only speaker. While you can set alarms, you're most likely not going to hear them unless your iPod is not muffled by anything and the room is completely quiet. I definitely would not count on it reminding you for anything important.

Regarding a lock, I just looked on mine, and yes it does have the same lock as the iPhone.

» Glenn Scam  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Chris24.

I host more than 10 sites at Media Temple, and when this first broke, I was worried that any exploits on their services would affect me as well. I know that many, many people called in worrying about the same thing -- are their sites just as vulnerable? How had a hacker broken through their servers in under a day?

I agree completely with this. Knowing that Glenn ran the latest version of WordPress and was on a Media Temple server, I panicked. I spent a few hours that night trying to figure out how he was hacked, because I was just as 'vulnerable' as him.

I obviously didn't find anything out, tried contacting Glenn to figure out how he was hacked and he just ignored me. I didn't bother contacting Media Temple because I know they weren't the source of the problem; it had to be something Glenn was running.

Now finding out this was a scam just makes me angry. In the real world this is the equivalence of Glenn staging a robbery, calling the police, and going on the local news only to later reveal this was some ploy for a local radio station. There would be consequences in the real would, and there should be consequences online as well.

You just don't mess around with hacking online. While this may all be in good fun, in reality people are getting worked up over this. I hope Malcor quits while he's ahead. Anyone else who agrees to being hacked will look stupid and just show all they care about is the money.

I upgraded my system to Leopard using Archive and Install. All is working perfectly after removing an incompatible Finder plugin and reinstalling the Cisco VPNClient, Photoshop CS3, and SteerMouse.

I pre-ordered it this morning. I love that it's going to arrive on launch day before the Apple Store get it. I'll probably even have it installed before 6PM.

Has Anyone Jailbroken Their iPhone/iPod Touch?

Apple Community — Posted: Oct. 12, 2007  ...   Last By: jchristopher @ 1 year ago

Just wondering if anyone has done this yet:

iPod Touch Jailbreak

iPod Touch Jailbreak

If you haven't, I would highly recommend it. As long as you follow *all* the directions, you should have no problem.

I'm loving all the new apps. I can't wait to see what other stuff the iPhone/iPod touch Dev Team comes up with.

» Waiting for WordPress 2.3.1  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cooper.

I don't keep my nose in WordPress.org's Trac system - but since you do - maybe you could tell me if the WordPress upgrade routine will ever include those things you mentioned?

There has been the occasional talk about it, but nothing too serious yet. I tend to think something like this, while nice, will probably never make it into core.

» Waiting for WordPress 2.3.1  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cooper.

Well, so far no major bugs have been identified in Trac, so there is no push for a speedy 2.3.1 release. I would say if the plugins you use are 2.3 compatible, there is no reason to hold back. Just make a good backup of your files and database, disable all plugins (very important for this upgrade), and upgrade away.

» MacBook Pro randomly shuts down after 1.3 Battery update.  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cavemonkey50.

I haven't had any problems with the latest battery update, but I have read a few scattered reports across the internet. From what it sounds, the battery update is failing to update the battery's firmware. I'd try reinstalling the battery update and see if that helps at all.

Leopard Release on Oct 26 at 6pm?

Looks like Leopard may have a release similar to the iPhone. Is anyone getting excited for Leopard yet, and if you are, do you plan on waiting in line?

» Trackpad on MacBooks  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

Possibly. I have a first gen 2GHz Core Duo MacBook. What version do you have?

» Trackpad on MacBooks  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by estarla.

To turn on those features: Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Trackpad. From there enable "Use two fingers to scroll", "Allow horizontal scrolling", and "Place two fingers on the trackpad and click button for secondary click". Hope this helps those not enjoying the awesome MacBook trackpad.

I turned wp-cache off and enabled pconnect. phpMyAdmin reported only a 1-2 connections the whole time. What I would see is a command query, then if I refreshed the page quickly I saw the same query issue a command sleep, then the following refresh disappear. A couple of times I saw previous query IDs coming back, most likely connections held open, following the same behavior as before. Doing the same with a regular connects worked in the same manner without seeing the sleep command and never seeing the same query id come back.

Are you seeing a sleep command generated at all? I wonder if something is borked on a particular grid node and doesn't properly sleep pconnections.

» Media Temple Hosting + WordPress  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by bobbyh.

Interesting. Maybe pconnects don't work so great on a Grid platform since every page request has the potential to be coming from a different server.

I'm changing my pconnects back to connects. Thanks for the info bobbyh.

» Media Temple Hosting + WordPress  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by bobbyh.

Are you experiencing that issue personally? Unless all connections happen at the same second, you should not reach your connection limit. The whole point of pconnect is to reuse connections not open more and more.

I just talked to (mt) and GPU calculations will be disabled until they are completely sure of their algorithm. They will keep us updated on the (mt) blog.

All customers who experienced GPU overages should have gotten this email: http://www.onedigitallife.com/2007/04/26/media-temple-false-gpu-overages/

So, if you experienced a GPU overage since 3/10/07 and haven't been refunded, contact (mt) and they'll refund your account.

» Media Temple Hosting + WordPress  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by bobbyh.

bobbyh, I've just been checking my GPU, keeping a log of the time accessed and GPU at the time. I've been able to fairly accurately measure my GPU that way.

By the way, I just logged into my Account Center to see the following message:

This component is currently being upgraded to provide more accurate reporting. GPU accounting for your site has been temporarily disabled.

johnnydebacle, I did think something was up as my GPU surged this past month, prompting my overage which lead to me and (mt) working on my GPU issue.

» Media Temple Hosting + WordPress  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by bobbyh.

Article19, are you using dynamic templates or static? If you're using static essentially your running a website using pure HTML and no server processing. The largest factor of your GPU would be then building your pages, which only occurs on new comments and posts.

bobbyh, maybe don't take my advice on pconnect. I've been playing around with it, and it appears that perhaps usage is lower with a regular connect. pconnect is weird, so it greatly depends on the number of visitors and what they're doing. I'll let you know what my final outcome is.

Another tweak which I just instated last night is enabling Bad Behavior. Bad Behavior is keeping the spammers out of my site, which appears to have created a 30% reduction in GPU usage from my already lower GPU number. Looking at my logs, spammer were hitting my uncached comment posting file thousands of times per day. Since there is no way to cache that file, that's non-stop processing. BB adds a slight bit of overhead for normal visitors (5-10ms), but saves in the big picture with spammers. Using BB will of course greatly depend on your spam issue.

I'd like to also play around with the difference between Akismet and Spam Karma 2. I suspect SK2 is the lesser of resource hogs since Akismet involves constantly checking an outside service, but I'm not positive. When I get to testing the difference, I'll let you know.

After freaking out late last week, I've been working with (mt) to lower my GPU usage.

First off, a lot of people think the GPU contains database usage. I was under that misconception, too. Talking with (mt), GPU usage only counts CPU processing time on the Grid (MySQL is on the SmartPool system). Query time will not affect GPU but processing of the data will.

I've found a lot of dumb minor things on my site that were greatly affecting GPU. For one, running an uncached feed. Since moving my Feed to Feedburner I'm down about 30% of usage. I'll have more tips like that later in the week, when I write a blog post on the subject.

To answer the original question,

1. Now on Feedburner, past GPU usage was uncached feed.
2. ~500-600 GPU a month. Was on (gs) lite, so I had overages.
3. Mint tells me ~50,000, Urchin tells me ~225,000

I thought something like that was up. Thanks johnnydebacle for the information.

» Macbook Bag  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by jturmel.

I use the SF Waterfield and the extra cost was completely worth it. The case is very thick and the inside is a nice padded material to prevent scratches. I throw my MacBook in my backpack all the time, and I wouldn't dream doing it without this case. You already spent $X on your MacBook, you might as well spend a little extra to insure its protections.

» WTF: (mt) Grid mySQL Containers Cost Extra  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by zattraz.

Hmm, even more interesting, the SmartPool v.2 crap they're putting non-container customers on is limited to 20 max connections. That's like nothing! Users like myself will be forced to upgrade to containers or risk having mySQL connection overages.

WTF: (mt) Grid mySQL Containers Cost Extra

Technology Community — Posted: Apr. 6, 2007  ...   Last By: zattraz @ 1 year ago

I don't know how many of you have been following the Media Temple Grid saga, but Media Temple promised its users dedicated mySQL Grid Containers due to the massive amounts of mySQL issues they were having. Media Temple delayed those containers several times and tonight finally unveils them only to cost as little as an extra $20/month. I just find it ridiculous that they're charging for something they initially told us would be free. Any other Media Temple users out there as pissed as me?

I used to use SuperDuper to create a clone of my drive. Unfortunately, I had some issues with the program and Spotlight, so I looked for an alternative.

I now use Chronsync and back up my home folder once a month. Weekly I pop in my flash drive and back up my school documents folder.

So far I haven't had to use any of my backups, but should that time come, I think I'll be fairly safe.

Check out the program on the developer's site. Then, read my review. If you like it, throw down a digg.

So, what do you think? If you don't like it, what do you currently use to manage your assignments?

Speed Up Mac OS X While Running Parallels

It's way too expensive for me. I currently use a Logitech MX518 which suits my need. It's plugged in to my Apple Keyboard, so when I switch to desktop mode there is only one cable to plug in. When I'm on the road, I really don't see a need for a mouse, since I really like the MacBook's trackpad.
