One concept I've been wanting to implement for a while, but don't have the time to do for free, is location data.

You "leave" files, web pages, descriptions, etc at an actual location. A restaurant leaves a menu. You're walking by and browsing google maps or another app, and you've got a cue that there's info. Click, see the menu, when you're near the restaurant. This is a simple example, it can be a lot more robust and interesting. Just imagine some ARGs with that kind of feature.

English please.

Base example of augmented reality app: Google Maps knows your GPS location and which way you're pointing your phone.

Point your phone's camera at something, for example the White House. Looking at the live view on your phone's screen you see a floating "White House" label-graphic overlayed by the Google Maps app.

This is the part that gets me:

Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should take action now — especially when it comes to children.

So throw everyone into a panic but don't allow us to see what the data says. I understand the urgency with kids but perhaps the system needs an overhaul if it takes so long for findings to be published (legitimate ones) that millions of people would be effected.

There have been a lot of studies on this that have come up negative. What is it about this one that invalidates them?

Also... I really have to question these people. They suggest using a wireless headset. That still gives you a big dose of EM in your head. It's not the same, it could be more, it could be less, depends on the brand and design.

A wired headset would reduce the affect quite a lot.

In 2008 we are still having this cell phone causes cancer issue? There has to be a definitive answer to it and I don't want to sound like the people in the 1950s who said smoking doesn't cause cancer, but it seems silly to think that any type of phone will bring about cancer in your head.

More on this:

Adults should keep the phone away from the head and use the speakerphone or a wireless headset, he says. He even warns against using cell phones in public places like a bus because it exposes others to the phone's electromagnetic fields.

I heard it on the local news a couple of times today and thought I would share. Not using a phone in public places sort of contradicts the "keep the phone aware from your head" advice. One sentence makes it seem as if keeping the phone away from the head lessens the exposure and the second sentence basically negates that by implying using it at all (or someone else using it) can harm you - like second hand smoke.

I wonder how much this would have impacted the iPhone's (or any other's) success it this was released a couple of weeks earlier.

How could you not want this as a superpower?

The years of endless rehab and medication I'd need for my neck and back as a result of those landings would pretty much wipe out any moments of super-hero glory from the leap.

I saw this video last night, right before catching the slam dunk contest on ESPN. Sadly, I was comparing those kids against the ants, and came out disappointed -- even when that one dude jumped over two buddies. My only thought was...yeh, that one ant jumped over like 5 other ants while flipping through the air.

That is a rather odd request. That really only applies to gamers, I'd wager.

There's a handful of programs that really take advantage of gpu's outside of gaming, and the number is growing. The apple platform is the only place you get that now, but I know there are linux libraries and drivers in the works, and surely by now there's something on vista that will.

While your graphics card does control the rendering of what's on your screen, even the most basic crap from 4 years ago can quickly render high resolution desktops and apps. Graphics chipsets matter when you're watching highly compressed video for which the driver allows the use of hardware encoding/de-encoding, games, and less than a dozen apps that actually tap into the GPU for image processing.

Also worth mentioning that you can't upgrade your graphics chipset on any laptop or notebook, period.

I second Drupal...

They have lots of content modules which relate directly to audio/video...

The template system for Drupal is pretty easy to work with too...on a very simple level, it's just a matter of plugging in a few php snippets into an html template, though I'm sure most CMS' have matured to about that point now.

I was really stumped by this one. Didn't 2.5 just come out with a lot of oompah?

I just set up a site for my girlfriend - yup, still going strong, hence the recent silence ;) - and I'm not looking forward to spending time on this.

Sure, it's not rocket science, but think of Murphy. She needs the site to be live 100% from next week because she's got a booth at some big fashion fair, and all the press, PR and invites are about to go out... I think I'm skipping this, or at least waiting a couple weeks.

Although, I do like that Google Gears feature... and that quick post feature... and...

/*heads to wp.org and begins download*/

;)

@Kami, I get great search results, and my site is indexed just fine running 2.0.11. (In fact, 70% of my visitors get there from a search, which is kind of a mixed blessing, as it indicates that regular readers aren't as high as I'd like, I think. :( ) That being said, I think it's due to a couple of plugins that I use that it gets indexed so well.

Anyway, yes, I know all about upgrading to keep current with critical security flaws, but that doesn't mean I have to leave the legacy version as the WP crew have committed to keeping it current security-wise until 2010. So, I have a year or so before I HAVE to do something, and by then maybe a newer version will come out that I can deal with.

It's not just quiet. It's also ahead of schedule. I mean, when is the last time a WordPress release was actually on time, let alone ahead of time?

Besides, 2.6 isn't really packed full with features. Like the post said, a lot of it is meant to streamline what they have now rather than adding completely new features, which is a good thing and I actually appreciate them for this.

The good thing is that in all my 50 over plugins, I don't have any problems with compatibility. They said it wasn't meant to be anyway since it's pretty much the same as 2.5.

It takes me 20 seconds to update each WordPress site I maintain though. SSH is a Godsend.

@Dreamweaver: You should update your WordPress though for a number of reasons. One are the critical updates that come with it. Second is that if I remember correctly, Search engines like Google or Technorati doesn't index older versions of WordPress. I'm not sure if they meant version numbers or older versions of WordPress that have security vulnerabilities which rules out the patched legacy 2.0. Though, come to think of it, it's been 2.0.11 for ages. I thought it was supposed to keep updating as soon as new security flaws come through?
