Definetely Skitch, really good for things like if I take a screenshot of something, and it has a serial number or some private information, I can simple draw over it really quickly and easily. mySkitch is also really nice to upload images to the web FAST, but the other webpost features are great too.

I use FastStone Capture (windows), which used to be completely free for home use up until version 5.3, which is the version I still use. I like it a lot and it has a lot of different modes.

Snag It 7 is now completely free with an option to upgrarde to 8.x half price.

Jing has been updated with more options - upload to FTP, Flickr etc... - this is much better because you don't have to rely on their hosting when sharing like you did in the earlier version. You even create templates so that it automatically puts the embed code in to your clipboard.

I use Jing and Picnik, depending on what I want to do with the picture.

I've tried a couple of other "capture" programs but looks like I now have to check out Skitch.

Actually, on windows pressing ALT-Print Screen captures the current window so it's not as bad as all that. There are free better tools available though.

Windows Vista has a screen capture utility built in that includes highlighting tools - just type snip in to the start area to find it. That allows you to draw around the area you want.

@jensized: it was a mockery in and of itself. Personally I feel the prnt scnr button is a waste of plastic. And ... coupled with paint to cut out the part you want ... *shudders*

@Noel: no, in Windows, as far as I know, when you need anything beyond Prt Scr, you need an app.

I used ScreenHunter for a while and was happy with that. Also, there is SnagIt, by the fine people of Techsmith, but that costs 40 bucks. I hear it's great and obviously you'd get support, but unless you need all sorts of high-end features (and some video support), I'd go for ScreenHunter.

Update: also, SnagIt works with Vista, ScreenHunter doesn't appear to yet.

I was using the default OS X screenshot commands until I was introduced to Skitch. It took a little getting used to in order to remember new keyboard shortcuts, but I'm not looking back - that is until I'm faced with the decision to plop down some $$. Hmm, do I pay for software that does something as simple as capture and upload screenshots?

I mainly use Jing. I just have to turn off their horrible edge of screen shortcut bar thing - I mapped it to the print screen key and it works very nicely.

I can't remember what I used back on Windows but there are tons of good little apps on download.com...

Update since Rich posted at the same time I did: this just leaves you with a pdf or png you still have to resize or upload of course. No fancy Flickr integration.

I use Skitch (Invite only still, I believe, but I have invites if you'd like one). As well as letting you drag-select an area, you can just click a window to capture that window. Quite handy, really, as it has built in editing and uploading features (including directly to Flickr).

So I know there are a number of apps out there that allow you to take screenshots and then the standard apple key commands but I was curious as to what software you all used to capture specific windows.

I really don't like the whole drag a box around the window because then i have to take it into photoshop to capture the normal curves of safari's windows.

what do you all use?
