I'm really quite excited about this. I jailbroke my iPhone when it was 1.0.2 and I thought the 3rd party apps were completely fantastic. I still think the phone is top-notch even without 3rd party apps and that's why I bought it, but officially providing an SDK just makes things that much better. There will be some really exciting apps built when it's truly legit.

Now all we need are officially unlocked iPhones :) I'm crossing my fingers that when it gets here in Asia in 2008 (finally!) it doesn't get locked to any single network here.

I'd love, love, love to see a GTD app.

For example: prohibiting simultaneous wifi+microphone access would be the thing I locked down if I were them.

No joke... Nothing like pissing off AT&T by allowing the iPhone users to use Skype etc. from their phones :)

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February.

Jobs is good as saying when he's wrong isn't he? No mention that he's been taking the product in the wrong direction or that this is even a decision reversal... Oh well... Never mind...

My theory is this is only something that has come about because people bitched and whined about it. Nokia were (and still are) having a great time laughing at the closed system.

I have a big problem with all this security junk (on noes it might get a virus!) people have been throwing around as a reason. It runs OSX doesn't it? It's surely as secure as your Mac. I don't understand why they think (and cite) cell networks as a higher risk platform than the internet...

I wouldn't be surprised if (again, probably citing security) Apple lock down certain features or combinations of features at the same time... For example: prohibiting simultaneous wifi+microphone access would be the thing I locked down if I were them. They might not have a choice if AT&T did their job properly when they got the contract.

Ok. Enough of the pessimism from me.

Over at Apple Hot News blog (is it a blog?) this morning, Steve Jobs appeared and announced that in February, Apple will be delivering an iPhone SDK to developers so they can create native, third-party applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

My theory about this has always been that the iPhone's underlying operating system is so closely tied to Leopard (their next OS release) that they didn't want to give the code away before Leopard's release lest they unveil some new features or have developers hacking into code that's actually a release ahead of what they have on their own machines. Cover Flow is being implemented in Leopard as a fundamental operating system feature, and this has been implemented on the iPhone since the day it launched. In Leopard there is a new core OS service that keeps track of all calendar dates and appointments for all applications, and again, perhaps the iPhone uses this convention as well, who knows.

Personally I'm most excited about gaming on the iPhone. I'm not a big gamer (okay I'm not really a gamer at all) but there are games that get me excited — Tiger Woods Golf being one of them. I can imagine TW Golf on the iPhone, playing in landscape mode, where you swipe your finger on the screen to emulate the golf swing, I think that'd be my personal iPhone mecca.

What apps are you guys looking forward to seeing (or making)?
