So here is my situation, I currently have a macbook pro with a 20" external display. I'll soon be ugrading to a mac pro and I'm trying to decide if I should just get another 20" monitor and utilize two displays or just sell my one 20" and upgrade to one 30"? What setups are you all rocking and what are your thoughts on one larger display vs. two smaller ones?

Let me know! Thanks!

I know with chainsaws the rule is that your bar is 1/3 the size of your saw in CCs. so if you have a 20'' bar you need a 60CC saw and if you have a 30'' bar you need a 90CC saw. if you are running a skip chain or cutten alot of softwood, you can get away with less CCs. i have a couple of bars but only one 58cc powerhead so I'm stuck below 20''. i'm gonna upgrade soon too.

Yeah, okay, Dale, I laughed my ass off over your first few replies. But turning all notes into a chainsaw discussion is getting pretty tired.

Edit: And to reply to the actual note. I have a 23" display that's awesome, but I have felt annoyed over not having a two. So I'd recommend two smaller screens.

There is one thing to keep in mind though, the "Spaces" feature in Leopard. Once you have a very simple way of quickly flipping through different setups of programs, the need for two displays might become less apparent.

My final suggestion: See how Spaces pans out. If it works well, get one large screen. If it doesn't, get two smaller ones.

I would say two 20" if you want productivity. One 30" if you want a hot-as-shit setup. There's no denying the absolute awe a 30" display puts on your face. And the first time you fire up an HD movie on it, you should be needing to change your pants.

But when it comes down to pure productivity -- two displays is much better than one. It allows you to "bucket" things into screens and completely ignore them. Things like IM/Email/Twitter on one monitor. When the going gets tough, you can focus all your energy on the one monitor while still having another monitor for real estate.

Yeah, that's exactly what Spaces is meant to do. Nice way of putting it.

for me it comes down to what i need for worken. one 30'' bar is a pain for limbing and bucking the smaller stuff. but good for fellen the big stuff. means it is a com-promise. some guys have small members so they buy really big bars to feel better. i guess that is ok to. i also guess it depends on what you will be doing with the monitor.

Two screens, definitely. More productive that way. I always feel crippled if I have to work on a computer with only one screen.

And yes, ENOUGH of Chainsaw Man, please. Maybe if we all just ignore him, he'll go away??

This would be another note that a user-generated poll would be great! Scrivs! Scrivs? Drat, where IS that guy when you need him?!? ;)

/goes away hollering for Scrivs

I have a single 30" Ultrasharp @ 2560x1600

I have all my programs (6) I need on this one screen, at peace, and no fighting over territory.

Unless you're more of a multi-tasker than I'am, I'd say the one 30" is more than enough.

I have a 30" monitor and if you don't have that many windows open then go with it, but if you are the type who fill his screen with tons of applications then I would go with 2 20". The problem with a 30" monitor is that since it is just one screen you want to expand your windows to all sizes and therefore you never really have any apps sitting side-by-side.

Switching to the Mac from Windows last April, I started out with two 20" (1600x1200) displays. I still had to use WinXP through Parallels for one particular program but found I couldn't spread Parallels across two displays (that may be different now). So I bought a 30" display.

IMHO, I would rather have the single 30" display over two small 20" displays any day. I love it.

One caveat, coming from Windows it took me a little while to get used to mousing all the way up to the menu bar. :)

Mac OSX *shudders*

jk :p

Grats on your 30" man, you went big, no need to go home.

Of course if I was going dual it would be 2x24".

sorry everyone. my old signature was too large.

I have one square 9 7/8'' monitor. it is an acer. how do i hook up another one?

Two 24" or even two 23" would be a very nice setup. But two 20" would make me feel too confined. :)

"Of course if I was going dual it would be 2x24"."

True that. Or just get crazy and go with dual 30" like Chris Pirillo, must be nice having sponsors. :)

Heck, why not go for it all and get two 30's?? If I had the room on my desk (and could convince myself - and the Man - that it was a NEED) I'd do it.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Believe me if I could do two 30's I would in a second. Thats a lot of money to shell out. The Dell 30's are a little cheaper...

decisions, decisions!

I appreciate your comments!
(back to my mental picture of 2 30's...ahhhhh)
