With the iPhone coming out this Friday and reviews starting to come in, I thought it would be interesting to make some suggestions for what the next-gen iPhone should have.

  • Games. No doubt this is in the pipeline like it was for the iPods, but if it is portable, people will want to play games. Almost silly to not see a game like Bejeweled come by default. Games like that were made for this device. Other games that can be easily done up:
    • Chess
    • Checkers
    • Connect Four
    • Pool
    • Breakout
  • Songs as ringtones. Maybe this is a licensing nightmare or something, but having the world's best portable music player in your pocket and not being able to use the songs it holds is torture. I don't expect the whole 5 minute song to play while the phone is ringing and now that I think about it how many songs would make for good ringtones if they just played the first 5 seconds? Okay, I'm changing this feature. iTunes should allows you to edit songs so that you can create ringtones for the iPhone only.
  • Instant Messaging. Another obvious choice and one in which I'm sure will make it in v2. For now this could be a great opportunity for a company like Meebo to gain some ground.
  • Picture messaging. You have a great phone, with a great camera, but no way to send picture messages? Silliness.
  • Voice dialing. I never use this feature, but I know plenty of people that do.
  • Video recording. A phone that plays movies, YouTube videos and TV shows, but doesn't allow you to record your own shitty video clips?
  • Memory card slot. Some data needs to be able to move from device to device.
  • More storage. Almost a guarantee for v2.

Just some basic things that I know many people will be looking for and I wouldn't be surprised if a future version of the iPod comes with some of these features (touchscreen games, video recording).

On the games note, I can only assume that since this phone basically IS a video iPod, wouldn't it be possible for them to allow access to the ones being sold already in the iTMS?

On the idea of IM's... I think, if they did this right it COULD present a good reason for their 200 SMS limit. Why Text Message when you can IM.

Personally for iPhone 2 I would just want a regular cell phone, that played music and had the great Apple design. Serioulsy simple and cool is all I want :-)

I reckon that the more features they add the narrower their market becomes (sure at a higher price point) while a low cost cool and simple phone that played music would have a much wider audience and give them a future advanced iPhone market.

That said - your list would make an awesome iPhone, nice job!

For V2 I want a lite version... I want a $250 iPhone that does web/wifi, phone, and "pda" like features.

I don't need an iPod/Phone combo.

Good list.

Instant Messaging. Another obvious choice and one in which I'm sure will make it in v2. For now this could be a great opportunity for a company like Meebo to gain some ground.

I saw an online AJAX app a few days back, designed for the iPhone, that allows you to connect to your AIM account and send IMs.

I don't really care for games, but your own songs as ringtones would be really nice.

You think so and hopefully that is the case so people don't have to wait for v2 of the phone. I'm sure code wise you have to change up a few things such as recognizing finger movement instead of wheel (as on iPod) movement. Same with IM tech. Since the iPod is basically a mini-computer the some of the stuff I listed doesn't have to wait till v2, it is probably just a download away whenever they decide to create the apps.

I could totally see a "ringtone composer" from Apple that would allow you to scrub a song to a clip you like and use that as a ringtone.

Here are a bunch of applications that are supposed to work on your iphone, I'm curious to see how some of these work.

I want a phone that doesn't...

  1. Freak out and refuse to operate.
  2. Corrupt its software rendering it a brick.
  3. Ship with a known bug that crashes the software.
  4. Doesn't cause me to fantasize throwing it off my 11th story balcony

I want a phone that you can just make calls and send text messages.

Does that even exist now?

I want a phone that you can just make calls and send text messages.

Does that even exist now?

Yes.
It's usually on store shelves right next to the saddles and lantern oils.

It's called "Pay As You Go"... I have an $18 phone that basically has a "talk" and "message" feature.

Doesn't even have them thar fancy schmancy "polyphonic" ringtones :)

Picture messaging. You have a great phone, with a great camera, but no way to send picture messages? Silliness.

Is that confirmed? I hadn't read that yet. If that's the case then I hope there's a way to upload images off the phone directly to a web service like flickr.

Confirmed from what I read yes.

What I find is that the one killer ap that would've been the "killerest" isn't there.

Despite this is the "best iPod"
Is the "internet as it should be"
Has wi-fi
Has iTunes with all its coverflow wonderment...

You still have to go to another computer to buy and download songs to then upload to the phone.

That just seems like a really big dropped ball of opportunity to me.

Still no accurate infos on the camera it seems...

I remember seeing that "ringtones" tab when that presentation was done at WWDC.

The killer feature I want to see is the ability to flip the keypad into landscape view in order to make the buttons wider. This may already be a feature on the iPhone but no journalist has tried (or at least no journalist has talked about it since it's probably a minor quibble to them).

Games would be great to see, but before that, I'd rather see Flash support or even limited Flash support (no Flash movies for example). Playing iPhone versions of Flash games seems like it'd be a hell of a lot of fun, and some innovative controls could be thought up via the multitouch system.

Instructions on how to get photos from your phone to Flickr here

I've been using Flickr's email feature for awhile, very handy.

Quickie update, David Pogue confirms that the keyboard can be used in landscape mode, but only when using Safari. That's fortunate for me when I write long Notes here on 9rules, but it'd be useful to have that feature in email as well. I guess time will tell if Apple updates the software.

Games I'd love it if they came out with BrainAge. I think alot of DS games would work well on the iPhone, though they'd be a screen short, it still seems like the touch screen aspects are so similar...

Songs as Ringtones Though it'd be nice to have the option, I was just thinking how strange it would be to have the song I'm listening to interrupted by another song for a ringtone, and then if I wanted to ignore the call, going back to the original song. Or would I be able to continue listening to my ringtone song?

IM I was wondering if this was a way for AT&T to make more cash from TXT messages. Look at the way they have txting set up, it looks very similar to iChat, with the speech bubbles. When I'm in iChat, I don't worry about how many times I reply - which might carry over to my txting habits.

Picture Messages Alot of phones have a dedicated email address, so I could theoretically send an email to my girlfriend's phone's email address, and she should get that as a picture mail. I think. Kinda.

Video recording This is the biggest, weakest one for me. I was actually hoping they might have a slimmed down version of iMove so you could record movies and edit them all on the fly. I've seen other phones that can do this.

For me, IPhone v2 needs to be cheap and available on my SP when my current contract allows for a new phone :P

How about something that can run high speed web browsing?

It seems to me that such a high tech device should run the latest cell phone network technology. To create the iPhone to run EDGE is very disappointing.

It seems they worked 10 times harder to make the device aesthetically pleasing than implementing the most up to date technology.

I would say that most of the features that people listed here can be found on 90% of the current phones on the market. For Apple to not include these features seems like a step backwards. I'm a huge Apple fan and think that Steve Jobs has done an amazing job with marketing and developing new technology.

The iPhone will only be successful because of the marketing buzz and aesthetics, not because it was the most technological device available.

I had a touch screen phone once and it was very sensitive. An example, the touch phone - can you use two hands?

Zeo, yup you can use two hands, and typing with two thumbs is what I routinely do with the iPhone.

Well although I wrote this a year ago it seems most of these basic features have made it. Now if only we could fill out the rest, but in the meantime I suppose GPS will hold me over.
