From the Clip Apple's App Store Offerings Still Have A Long Way To Go posted by Mike:

The concept of the App Store is fantastic and will be a revolution in mobile content, delivery, and usage, but the issue that I had been worried about all along reared its ugly head the instant I started browsing.

Most of the App Store apps are shit. Useless. Poorly-designed. Shit.

At the end of this article, I started getting into why most of the Social Networking apps I've downloaded have gotten the axe and it's simple: what they think I want is the opposite of what I want.

Most of the offerings in this category revolve around the idea that I want to be connected with all my friends at all times, knowing detailed information about their whereabouts, feelings, or current status. There are many problems with his:

  • Most of my friends don't have iPhones
  • The ones that do would all have to coordinate and use the same app
  • I don't live in a huge city so none of my friends are going to be in a 3-5 mile radius of where I'm currently at, prompting me to walk over and meet them if they're in a little circle on a map
  • I don't really care what they're doing, if I did, I'd be giving them a call

Am I the only person who doesn't feel the need to be connected to everyone at all points of the day? Maybe that same feeling is what makes me post to Twitter so infrequently, the concept of not really caring or wanting to share.

So are you saying you need new friends or more apps?

I'm just saying that the apps in the Social Networking category don't appeal to me and don't solve any huge issue I'm currently having in my social life. They also don't want to make me tell my friends about them which is the entire goal of the developers... to get as many downloads as possible.

I've heard a lot of people complaining about the sheer volume of crap apps in the AppStore but I have to say, I've found plenty to keep me entertained and organized on my iPod Touch.

Yeah there's crap in there I would never use but that's just it, I may think it's crap but someone out there will enjoy it.

If I filtered out all the stuff I didn't like, it would be completely lame to someone else.

dah dah dah daah daaaaah, I'm lovin' it.

I'm anxious for twinkle to get into the store. Twinkle is a location-aware twitter. You click the "near me" and set a radius, and you see other people twittering in your town. Some people use it for "tweet-ups." But it's pretty cool. I see people talking about local news, sports, weather, etc. Got a few followers/followees from it.

There's a lot of crap, I agree. There's a lot of good stuff too. I'd wager a better browsing/rating system is not long off.
